Worst thing you've ever eaten?
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:15:22 AM »
i know we all post here eating what we kill, possums, coons, tree rats, etc....but what really is the worst thing you have ever eaten?....mine is a toss up.  during survival training we had to eat grubs...damn those things are bitter!!!...the fact that you're putting a live creature in your mouth and chewing it to death....the other is monkey.  i shot a monkey in the panama jungle and we tried to cook it like a pig on 4th of july....TOUGH MEAT!!!! and definately a "wild" taste...skinning it was a hoot!..perhaps the locals should have shown us how to cook it.  during my stint in the army i ate raw fish out the rivers, lizards, grubs, crickets, snake, grasshoppers, etc....good training for survival  but hell on your digestive tract...those big green leaves come in handy if you know what i mean..ha!  what's the worst thing you have eaten?

Buche'.

It's nothing I had to kill myself.  While working at cambriabike.com we used to eat at this Mexican Carniceria.  They had buche' on the menu for a week and the one day that I decided to go for a couple buche' tacos- I later learned they'd pulled it off the menu the same day that I'd gotten it for reason of bacteria.  Buche' is marinated strip meat from the throat of a pig.

I've had it before when it was good but the one time that I had it at La Mexicana- I got more sick than I have ever been in my life!!!  The flavor sucked too...

...oh yeah, then there was that time in Mexico that we'd seen an iguana get hit and brought it home for bar-b-queing.  But THAT was delicious!

Although...     someone once dared me to eat a whole ladle-spoon full of wasabi.

I walked awy with a $100 and no nose-hairs left!

I know what you mean Rodger,

I had survival training at Fort Sherman Panama ! I always bit off the lower abdomens, as I wasn't fond of heads or legs as they went down..ouch !

But the thing that nearly killed me was horse meat, It tasted very good when I ate it, but it tore me up for three days after !!

I have eaten raw fish, snake, grubs, ants, grasshoppers, cooked bear, moose, deer, rabbit, squirrel, possum, ground hog, raccoon, elk, caraboo, lion, ostridge, buffalo, dog, pigeon, musk rat, pheasant, grouse, partridge, dove, quail, duck, goat, wild boar, and anything that didn't eat me first. I even ate mountain oysters before I knew what they were !

Yes, after survival training, some of the other disgusting items don't look so bad !

Now Ed, Shadow, has me beat. he ate mountain Lion, I never had the opportunity :)

I've eaten lots of gross stuff... LOTS of bugs, strange animals, and while in some Asian countries...Things that would be considdered "Part of the Family" here in the states.

But I'd have to say the worst thing I've ever eaten is a toss-up between Spiders and a June Bug.

The spider I ate on purpose. A nice sized terantula back in Oklahoma.... Tasted like a mouth full of fuzzy puss.

The June Bug was also in Oklahoma, but THAT was accidental. I was about 12 years old and ridin my dirtbike back to the homestead without my helmet on. I had a set of headphones on listening to a radio show and heard something funny as hell. I threw my head back to laugh and just as I opened my mouth, a HUGE June Bug hit the back of my throat and I swallowed in reflex. I felt that sucker fightin all the way down! Made me sick to my stomach thinkin about it. I was nautious all the way home.

Sea urchin is one my personal least favorites.  Close runner up would be venison, but not all venison.  I actually really like venison, but one night I cooked a backstrap up by cutting it into thin steaks, dipping in milk then coating in flour.  I must have eaaten 10 of those little steaks that night.  Tasted really good as always, but then........that night while I was asleep I had terrible nightmares of deer and stalking through the woods, and woke up in a cold sweat with the room spinning.  I guess it was some food poisening of some sort, but I have talked to other people with similar experiences eating rabbit....love rabbit also by the way:)

Does that make threes us us that have been to Ft Sherman? I ate a monkey in Panama myself. I got my "jungle expert" there in 1985. -still remember green hell too. -broke a damn toe on that course.
I never would have thought that I would run into people that shared those experiences on an airgun forum.

I was there forExpert Jungle Training and Quals on the M-60 and M-14 sniper rifle, sub-sonic :)

1970. At that time, I was the only one to escape the course without capture. We were instructed to meet at the main gate, IF we made it that far. I went to the main gate at Fort Sherman, and boy were they p*ssed. I knew what they had planed if you stayed in the Jungle Base Training Center.

Did you guys notice the humidity and bugs their ? Open your mouth, and you had lunch, and a drink ! :)

I never thought that I would find my training there funny ! But 38 years does dull your memory !

I'm feeling slightly robbed by my time in the Navy.  Never once did I get to stalk through jungles with a rifle while eating bugs and drinking humid air.  Worsed thing I had to endure was "Wog Day" and whatever that stuff was they fed us the morning before.....eww, forgot about THAT...worse than sea urchin spit for sure:)  Hehe, as bored and tired as I was working on the flightdeck of an aircraft carrier somehow 14 years later I miss the smell of jet fuel and the sunrise you can only see from the middle of the ocean.....even the Breakfast McNasty's I used to eat for breakfast sound good right about now.  Funny how time will turn a foul experience into a lifelong great memory eh?  All of those kids on that huge ship complaining about being stuck in the middle of nowhere, and here I am grinning ear to ear thinking about it all...haha!

Just sighted on the tall building lineon Palm Beach and swam ~ and swam ~and swam ~ well, you get the idea. Shored on Manalapan and had to walk several miles to the first house to call my uncle for 'rescue' fuel.
`
BTW, don't go deep sea fishing without checking to be sureyour fuel line seals are "water tight" first. Well, unless you like to swim . . . alot . . .
`
Worst thing I've eaten was coffee bean marinated fillet medallions. Horribly bitter, first bite made me gag so badly I had to go to the facilities ~ did I metion that it was bitter? Poor old belly was quite unhappy for a few days. Bill has me wondering now if that 'posh joint' was actually serving horse meat. No. Va.is quite the equestrian oriented subculture. Yechk!

Ever took a chew on a "bad" steamer (soft shell clam)?
The lingering flavor is indescribable (to me). YUK!

Well, I gotta say,raw oysters. Actually standing in the water, dropping raw oysters down the hatch and chasing them with warm beer.I didnt like them after the first one, but when my friend pointed at a little girl dropping them down, pointed at me and proceeded to refer to me as, well lets just say it wasnt nice.I downed about a dozen of them. Lucky for me, when I went back the next year and downed a couple, I got sooooooo sick, that was the end for me.BUT, I will take raw oysters and bathroom time over liver any day!!! I cant even swallow liver, tried it 3 times.

Tend to agree on sea urchin. Love sashimi of all other types, but "uni" is awful, I have given it 3 goes to make sure. I am sure.
I had pickled squid guts, yup, the throw-away entrail parts, once. That might be the all time worst tasting thing I ever ate. It was a special at the sushi joint and it was an alcohol related decision. They taste just about like they sound except more pungent, and lasting. I did not get sick but rather wished I had. Stupid.

Last trip to Beijing I had bee larvae (cooked). Actually they were pretty tasteless, but came with a chili powder that at least gave the taste buds something to do. Chinese really delight in eating the oddest things for the hell of it.
That same trip we had a cow hoof dish. There is actually a lot of meat in a cow hoof. This was actually delicious.
