Short Afternoon Hunt
« on: August 07, 2008, 02:49:19 PM »
Spent most of the day working around the yard but by 5 pm I had my fill of yard work so I told the wife I was going to take a ride to the duck farm to get in an hour or 2 of shooting.  Went in the basement and grabbed the Talon, a container of CPH's and I was off.  I arrived at the farm and parked in my usual spot, got loaded up and headed off for the nearest barn.  This particular barn has 4 large grain feeders positioned very close to it at the far end  and these feeders are  a magnet for quite a few G-hogs that live nearby.  I entered the barn from the opposite end of where the feeders are and quietly worked my was through the barn until I got to the other end.  There is a large opening in the barn wall to allow the ducks to come and go and the feeders are just outside this opening.  I stuck my head around the corner of the opening and scanned the feeders.  Sure enough there was a large brown furry critter halfway inside the closest feeder.  The only thing sticking out was his furry butt.

I took the Talon off safety put the scope up to my eye and waited.  Didn't take long,,,,,, the G-hog pulled his face out of the feeder, flopped onto the ground and took a second to look around.  That second was all I needed.  Pellet was away and the CPH made the every popular "POP" as it slammed home.  The G-hog went down for the count.  He wasn't as big as the one I got yesterday but he was decent sized.  I walked him back to my truck, put him in the shade and went looking for another target.

I worked my way around the farm for the next hour and only came across 2 more G-hogs.  The first one saw me coming a mile away and disappeared long before I ever got close to him.  The second one was a large G-hog that I actually stumbled upon as I walked through a small field.  He hadn't seen me so I had time to work myself into a good shooting position 40 yards out but I opted not to take the shot.  Behind the G-hog was another small field and immediately behind that was the main road that runs the length of the farm.  The road was perhaps 150 yards  away and there was a strip of woods, but I just didn't want to take any chances of a stray pellet making it's way to the road so I passed on the shot.  Now that I know where this G-hog lives I'll hunt him another day from a safer angle.

Came home, took a pic for my GTA huntin buddies then cleaned the pig and into the freezer.....

Jeff, seems once you have tasted g-hog meat, it's all over.. you keep going back for more :-)

That's great shooting and story as usual.  Nothing escapes you and your Talon.  Looks like you have tons of g-hogs on that farm to easily last you until the Fall.  Mind catching some and releasing them on my property?  :-)

Harry, I gotta tell ya,,,, the duck farm has so many g-hogs it's really amazing.  However with all the open land on the farm and all the cover available for them, combined with a never ending food source that they love, I guess I shouldn't be so amazed.  The place is literally a g-hog paradise.  I'm pretty good at mapping out where all the g-hogs live on the farm but every time I go on a hunt I always wind up finding a new burrow or spotting a new hog in a new spot.  There's only 1 other guy permitted to hunt on the farm, a buddy of mine from work.  He had one rifle, a GAMO  Shadow  .177 and he did alot of bird hunting on the farm with me, but I recently talked him into getting a .22 B-26, which he absolutely loves,  and I  introduced him to airgun g-hog hunting.  Now he's hooked on G-hog hunting and has taken quite a few himself, but even with both of us whacken em they are still breeding faster than we can kill em.  The farm owners won't let anyone else hunt on the place so it's up to me and my buddy to get the job done  :)  ,,,,, it's a tough job but someone has to do it  :)
