QB57 FUN Project

First, let me get my disclaimer out of the way.

Thanks to Gene for posting a project similar to this back in 2007. Jeremy (Jaymo) put some guns up for sale and the QB57sturred my interest as a project gun. My other motive for this project is my grandson. We had a family shoot day their last visit, Thanksgiving 2009. We had a blast but his 9 year old LOP is a tad shortfor my guns. So, I bought this one and decided todress it up, again thanks to Gene for the idea, and see if this fun shooter will light his eyes up. It should, it sure brought a smile to my face with each step and when I attached the bling-bling.

I just tossed the pieces together a few minutes ago. This weekend I'll fine tune the setup and get out my targets and chrony. I have a QF-2 seal/spring/cleaning kit on the way. I want to record the numbers before and after the new seals/spring. I'll post thoselater. And again, thanks to Gene, Aaronand the others for the ideason the shroud.

Whatcha think? Is this gonna get and hold the attention of a 9 year old "all guy" fellow???? I think so.

And Gene,I picked up one more neat littletrick from looking closer at your pictures. I was able to manipulate the laser/flashlight mount to jack it up off the scope and make it align better and more user friendly. Just one of those small details.

Since I'm not a brilliant machinest nor have the great equipment some of our members do I had to adapt and improvise. I walked the ailes at Lowe's and checked out every possibility of pipe for the job. I finally decided to use 1" PVC. Cheap and easy to work with. Looking over in the nuts, bolts and specialty fasteners, I foundsome 1" end caps, some 1" nylon spacers and some 8-32X1/2" nylon screws. I heated the muzzle break/front sight and removed it. After measuringand cutting what length I wanted, I attached the end cap and spray painted it and the nylon screws with Krylon Ultra Flat Camo Black and two coats of Krylon Satin Clear. I took a step drill bit and started opening the hole of the 1" nylon spacer till it snugly fit the barrel. This one I tapped all the way back to the hand guard. I step drilled another to fit the end of the barrel. Idrilled and tapped a hole in both of theseto 8-32 threads. I measured the shroud and drilled cooresponding holes to the spacers. Slid theshroud on and attached with the nylon screws.

I just reworked the laser and flashlight mount to where it sits a little higher and aligns perfectly with the scope crosshairs. Can't wait to zero it in and chrony. I think he will flip over it. They will be here for a visit in two weeks. I'll be posting another family shooting party. Stay tuned.

Brilliant work!  I really like the work you did.  Where did you get the scope/laser combo?

I picked one up on a whim and was surprised at how smooth the trigger is on mine and the first shots over the chrony blew me away.  720 fps from such a small package is amazing!  I got the QF2 rebuild as well but haven't needed it.  My kit didn't come with the synthetic seal but I rejuvenated mine with neatsfoot oil.  IIRC I was also surprised at how long the spring was.

Update us with some chrony numbers when you get a chance.

Great looking outcome on the QB Dave... They are really fun for projects.  You did well my friend and just think of all the other projects ahead of you.. hehe... I was trying to keep the cost down on the project and was really worried about spending more on the bling that the cost of the gun itself.

I found the laser/flashlight on eBay. A seller had it from his paintball equipment. Got it for $19 + $5.95 shipping. The scope came from Bass Pro Shop. It's an airgun rated RedHead Pursuit model 2-7X32 AO. Is on sale for $59. It is surprisingly clear and the zoom and AO work fantastic. Will get it outside tomorrow to play some and zero it in.

Thanks for the compliments guys. Gene, I follow all the projects I see posted, I love to watch the progress. And the final products you guys turn out are breath taking and totally amazing!!!!! When I find the time, I go back through The Shop forum and browse. There's a LOT to learn and some excellent tips to pick up. I love this site!!!!!

Oh, and you MIGHT notice the shots above where I was assembling the shroud? I had it mounted upside down. Arrrggghhhhh....had to tap the spacer off the end of the barrel to turn it. I was able to twist the bottom one with channel locks. Just got in too big of a hurry. LOL Screws to the bottom so they don't show. Dooohhhhh..............

And one last tip about the QB. You will see I added a Hawke adjustable scope mount adapter to the factory dovetail mount. I didn't measure it but I have a suspicion the factory job is 9mm or so, not 11mm. A standard AG mount (11mm or 3/8") will not tighten down on this. So, I added a NICE adjustable rail to be able to mount the scope. Sometimes you just gotta use what ya got.

And now I see why there are so many folks that say this is a FUN shooter. It's short, light (before bling ) and just fun to shoot. I prefer a longer heavier gun to help me steady. And I've always believed a longer barrel will help with accuracy. Well, accuracy can be had with a shorty too. Check this out.

I haven't had time to set up the chrony yet but will before the weekend is over.And by my best guesstimate it is putting out around 600fps at the muzzle. Will see how close I get. It likes CPHP 14.3gr but also shot a tight group, but just a tad right, with Beeman Silver Bear Hi-Impact 12.65gr Hollowpoint. Seems it will probably shoot almost any ammo accurately. I think I like this little jewel.

Unfortunate for him, it stays with me. It's HIS shooter but his parents would rather it stay here. I also bought a Winchester 1000WS and tuned it for my granddaughter.It makes for special times for grandadand the kids when they visit. Might help the grandkids beg them to visit more often. There's a method to my madness. LOL If he were to take it home they feel he MAY find himself getting into trouble, as young boys tend to, if grandpa isn't around supervising. Hey, hemight beMORE prone to getting intotrouble with such a big kid hangin' with HIM. But don't tell my daughter. HeeHee

My guesstimator must be slipping or the low daylight may have the chrony reading low. I only got around 500fps with CPHP 14.3gr. It is VERY accurate as you can see from the above picture. My QF-2 kit should be here Monday. After doing a deburr, hone, relube and install new seals and spring, it should bring the numbersup. BUT, it's a sweet shooter and VERY accurate as is for such a little piece. Definate a FUN shooter!!!!

That might not be too far off.  14.3 at 500 fps is about 8fpe.  I only have the .177 barrel and I just shot it over the chrony at 740 fps with 7gr Hobby which translates to 8.5 fpe.  I would think that .22 should be slightly more efficient so you might pick up some power with the tune.  The Chinese guns are notorious for either being dry or more likely overly goobed with Chinese mystery grease!
