Discovery reveiw part two
« on: September 10, 2008, 05:08:56 PM »
It's only part two because part one was lost:)

Okay, got the discovery .22 and disassembled for inspection less valve. This gun did not suffer from lube anemia as some RWS folks have reported, there was enough for two guns there.

The first thing noticed was the transfer tube. It was familiar from the 2240 I use to play around with, but where alignment was off a little on the 2240 it is off alot on the Disco. The bolt probe does not place the pellet clear of the port and there is so little room for pellet placement in the breech it makes me wonder how others have dealt with this.

Barrel/receiver fit is not impressive. The crown looks OK. The bore/rifling look OK, no better. Don't like the front sight assy. as my thought is parts should be rigid or not touching at all.

The trigger isn't great, but not as bad as read from some.

Please do not take this as bashing the disco, I think this is a great platform and if they were perfect what would we do with our spare time?

thanks Dave

Dave, these are your findings and no one will blast you here on the GTA. It is good that you can point out these build charactoristics to people who may be interested in buying a Disco. As I have said from the beginning Crosman has done the air gun community a favor bringing out a no frills PCP which normally many of us cannot afford the normal price of a PCP. It lets one who is looking to buy a PCP and does not want to spend a fortune for all the equipment that it takes to support it. There may be mods that people will come up with to overcome the ariea's that you speak of.

Dave mountain air has a extended prop that will push the pellet a little further in but I have heard that if you do not remove material from the rear of it it makes loading the pellet rather hard especially with a low mounted scope . When I talked to ROY about the FPS gain it would give he did not seam to think it would be terrific so I opted not to do it . And yes the gun is a $ 235 dollar gun that is going to have a few small issues . If you read the post here you will see I have posted the size and length of screw that you will need to make your own power adjuster . Its under Discovery mod's by Timmy 1959 . Keep us posted Marvin

Hi Gene,

Yes It would seem the Disco will benefit from mods as the 22xx guns. The buy in you mention is a great thing in it's favor. Could be wrong, but at this price point some seem uncomfortable risking a BOOBOO.
Started myself with a 2240 and I admit it is easier to be daring with a $50.00 gun.

The only thing stopping progress is my inability to explain how important a cronograph is to define the results of each step to my wife:). After 30 years marrage to me she is still under the missconception that you have fun taking it out of the box and shooting.

Keeping peace in the family,

Dave

Hello Marvin,

I have been thinking about bolt probe mod but with CenterPoint 6X compact and offset two piece rings in best position found I still struggle with pellet placement. Have you heard of anyone reworking the bolt/receiver relationship for more clearance?

BOLT

Dave all I have heard is that the Discovery already has a longer bolt than the 2250 . That's why Roy did not claim much of a gain in his bolt. Other than what I mentioned about removing material from the back of the bolt to allow it to slide farther back to give more room to load the pellet no . I have small hands so it is not too hard for me with a low mount scope if I point the muzzle straight up to load the pellet .Marvin
