IZH-61 for a younger shooter?
« on: June 26, 2006, 12:34:33 PM »
Hi all,

Just found out about this Forum and it seems like a really nice, friendly neighborhood!

I have a 10 year old who is past the Daisy Red Ryder stage but not big or strong enough (or old enough) for some of the other air guns I have so I'd like to get him something he can handle but something ... "cool".

It appears that the IZH-61 would fit his frame and he wouldn't have too much trouble cocking it.

Are there any downsides to this AG? If I did get it, I can see myself attempting a lube tune, maybe more if it responds well to upgrades/modifications (different spring, o-rings, seals, etc)

What are your thoughts out there?

Thanks much,

George   :)

Hi,

I have one, and I think it is pretty cool also as I am a 63-yr old kid.  LOL.  It shoots 7.5 gr pellets at about 450 fps.  It makes a decently accurate little target rifle at 10-15 yards.  It is  about the right size for a kid or small person although the stock is adjustable.  I have a bugbuster scope on mine, and because of the short eye relief I had to use a BKL cantilever mount.  But, young eyes might like the iron sights.  A cheap red dot would probably work well also.  A black red dot would help keep the tactical look.  Because of the relatively short scope rail you might have to put the rings on one end of the scope.  In fact, for a small scope, one ring is all that you might need.  Keep in mind the safety issues with springers if the trigger is pulled while the lever is cocked open.   It would be a nice little gun to teach gun safety to a youngster.  Your youngster probably wouldn't have a problem after you instructed him on the do's and don'ts, but his little buddies wouldn't have the benefit of your instruction.  The gun''s performance in terms of smoothness could probably benefit from some tuning.  Do a Google search, and I think you will find some tuning information on it.  Not much can be done in the way of power increase because of the relatively small chamber.
