Whisper/newbie questions?
« on: April 09, 2008, 02:40:24 PM »
Ok, I am brand new to shooting springers so bare with me I have a lot of questions. I recently bought a gamo whisper.  My first questions are on  how to take care of this gun? What do you oil, what do you grease?  Is it ok to drop oil down the barrel?  How do you clean the barrel? Do they make barrel snakes for these things?  The owners manual is very vauge.

Ok second issue is accuracy and pellets.  I want and should be able to drive tacks with this thing @ 40yds.  I have about 1000 rounds through this gun and can't seem to find a pellet that pattern's well.  The only pellet I have had decent success with have been the RWS super point extra's.  Anyone else like these? I already have the GRT-lll trigger on the way and don't plan on wasting any more pellets until I get it installed.

Are bi-pods a good idea?

How can I quiet this gun down!  I was totally shocked the first time I shot this gun,  it literally felt like a cannon went off in my hands.  Those Raptors sound exactly like a .22! Keep in mind this is the first true springer I have ever shot.  I have read that  a certain "tar" works.  What is this "tar" and where do you get it?

Any helpful hints on tuning this gun would be greatly appreciated!  All I want is to pick off a black bird @ 40yds, am I honestly asking too much?

Do not shoot too many Raptors through your whisper or you will be sending it to CDT for a spring replacement. They are too light and will damage your innards. Try to shoot pellets from 7.5 to 9gr. Most of the noise you hear from the gun is the mechanism. From what they say a good tune will smooth that and the sound out. Your groups will get better too. The recoil is lessened and you can hold on the target better. The trigger you have coming in the mail will make a huge difference, it did in my Whisper. The first time you pull that trigger it will surprise you. Make sure you are on your target when you put your finger in the trigger housing. When shooting rest the gun just in front of the trigger housing on your fist or open hand. That helped me out a little as well.

I have had great luck with Predator pellets and Wolverines. The Wolverines are the same as JSB exacts. Rws Superdomes shoot well for some guys with the Whisper. I cant get any pointed pellets to group well for me.

As for cleaning the preferred way seems to be using weed eater string using a lighter to melt one end a little bit, them putting a .22 cleaning patch on the other end that is sharpened to a point Slide the pointed end through the  with the patch following. With the Whisper use a straw to protect the baffles and pull the patch through the straw.

Babbling, hope that helps.

PS WELCOME This is a wonderful site. Man is this addicting.

Welcome to the GTA Forums Nick,

This is a GREAT Place to BE ! Everyone here is a part of our airgun family, airgun addicted one and all !!

If you have fired 1000 pellets through your rifle, I guess you have already cleaned her barrel. If not go not put oil in your barrel, use goo-gone or goo-be-gone. Take weed trimmer line, tie a loop at one end, put some goo-gone on a .177 patch, and pull it through. On your Whisper it is best to pull the patch down through the muzzle break as Dan recommends.

The use of a touch of Moly lube on the cocking link pivot points is all that you need to do for lubrication on the outside of your rifle, and a good wipe down after each use, with a silicone cloth.

As mentioned, the use of Raptors can shorten the life of your spring, and the noise you hear is the Raptor breaking the sound barrier, sonic boom !

As for tuning, check our Library: http://www.gatewaytoairguns.com/library/Library_MainPage.htm

I don't know how advanced you are, and it can be dangerous to open up a springer without a Spring Compressor and some skills.

As for the black bird at 40 yards, practice, practice, practice. That is a tough shot !

The GRT-III trigger is GREAT trigger, and is light, so follow proper range safety and don't touch the trigger until you are ready to fire. :) It's not that Gamo hammer !

I hope to see you around often !!!

I have read here (GTA) about using a weed-eater plastic wire and a patch to clean the barrel.  But crazy4salmon's  idea of using a straw to protect the s ilencer/muzzle break  is ingenious.  All my air rifles got about 400 to 600 shots thru them....I think they'll need a barrel cleaning soon.

Yea most of the good stuff was already covered but I can add this(same post I used in a few threads recently): Top consistent shooters in most 1000fps rifles are pellets in the 7.9-8.5 range, the sweet spot is suppose to be around 8.2-8.3g. Try RWS superdomes (8.3g) these work work well and so do Crosman Premier hp's(7.9g), Gamo Hunters(8.3g) and Rockets(9.6g or 8.2g different sites says different, nothing on the can) and Predators(8.10). Except for Gamo's alot of rifles like their own brand of pellets, where as the chamber and pellet are sized according to manufacturers specificatons. My Whisper Loves heavier pellets. I have them listed in groups as how they shoot. I base it off my standard pellet I use the Crosman premeir hollow point mainly because it groups well and I needed a hp for my Beeman trap. Example Rockets shoot 2 inches higher then the CPHP, Gamo hunter 2 inches right, Tomahawks 1 inch low etc. I just pic the pellet for my needs, check my chart, adjust the scope for that pellet and generally it will be right on. Good tip is like everyone says about the GRT III trigger-have barrel pointed at target BEFORE you put finger in trigger area! Very sensitive smooth trigger. The bipod is handy device and works well. To get on paper with my scope I had to crank the clicker like 60 clicks Left, 40 clicks down. The scopes screws do come lose from the recoil, tighten at least once after a 1000 shots. My Whisper seems to need to warm up, like the 1st 3 shots suck, so I don't get serious to after the 3rd shot. The hold is sensite too, 3 inches in front of trigger assemble, laying on your flat palm works well, I added about 2/3's a lb to my stock by stuffing it with a Nerf football, this balenced it for me, and tooks some of the twang out of the sound. More thump sound now. Not reccomened with the Whisper is the cleaning pellets, they could get stuck in the dampener, though I forgot when I got my new Gamo cleanining /maintenance center and shot the felt pellet, it did not get stuck, it popped like a .22 rimfire in my house and came out with enough force to crack a window 5 ft away. So be warned.
