Dry cat food has worked well for me so far for raccoon & possum at night and Starlings during the day.
You will get some cats no matter what you put out there and a skunk or two. I have attracted 3-4 skunks with all the food I place in my backyard at night, but I put up with them. I don't want to shoot them and stink up the yard and the neighborhood (although I have shot 2 of them and regreted it both times, hehe).
Do you have a hunting license? Most states dol not allow you to shoot anything without a hunting license. Also what gun do you plan on using for the larger night critters? Make sure you aim for the head only and you have enough power for a quick clean kill. They won't go down otherwise, unless you get lucky and find the heart if the pellet doesn't ricochet off the rib bones.
