What to hunt??
« on: February 15, 2010, 02:57:02 AM »
Live in the suburbs have some back yard. My neighbor has the market cornered with feeders. I am not allowed to shoot birds of any kind in my town. i can shoot anything else. We dont have rats. We probably have some coons. How can i attract these guys to my yard? I cant drive 40 miles all the time to my hunting grounds.

If your neighbor has feeder's their probably attracting critters like nutters during the day and night critters too. Bandit's have been known to raid feeders like they do the Deer feeders for corn. Start setting up feed stations and see what show's up to feast. Night critters love dry cat food and just about any kind of table scrap's and make yourself a " compost pile" for your plant's so to speak :o  :) and something will catch the scent and come in to check it out. Check your local law's about airguns in the burbs and about hunting with them or using them for pest control, don't want your neighbors to wig out and call the law enforcement on you. Ed

I'm pretty sure you can kill any European starlings, European house sparrows, or Rock Doves (feral pigeons) you like. These are invasive species and damage indigenous bird populations.

No state in the union has any regulation regarding the taking of said birds, to my knowledge.

Dry cat food has worked well for me so far for raccoon & possum at night and Starlings during the day.

You will get some cats no matter what you put out there and a skunk or two.  I have attracted 3-4 skunks with all the food I place in my backyard at night, but I put up with them.  I don't want to shoot them and stink up the yard and the neighborhood (although I have shot 2 of them and regreted it both times, hehe).

Do you have a hunting license?  Most states dol not allow you to shoot anything without a hunting license.  Also what gun do you plan on using for the larger night critters?  Make sure you aim for the head only and you have enough power for a quick clean kill.  They won't go down otherwise, unless you get lucky and find the heart if the pellet doesn't ricochet off the rib bones.

Remember it is a "composting pile"...............

Here you can shoot nuisance animals if they are causing damage to your property.
