Pigmee or Warthog
« on: March 22, 2008, 11:23:11 AM »
I want a small CF tank to top off 909S when out hunting or away from shop where my 400cu.ft. tanks is kept. My problem is ,the local paintball shop will not fill it because its not made for paintball, and the scuba shop can only fill to 3,600psi.So,filled to 3,600 psi ,is it woth getting, not cheap but would be handy. Do you own either one of these CF tanks and how do you like them. Thanks,Paul

I have read on other forums about firestations being able to fill to 4500, IF you have the right adapter for their filling stations. Also if you sweeten the pot with a gift for the lads in the firehouse, such as a deer you have shot, or some brews.

that's a third alternative at the required pressure.

Unfortunately I have got one of these, and discovered there are no testers in NZ capable of inspecting or testing the carbon fibre bottles, so mine becomes useless after the lab test expires in 19 months......bummer.

Here in podunk Indiana,I have several friends on the fire dept. most since high school, they`d b happy to fill my tanks if it wasn`t for the city`s lawyer!(We all know the lawyers and the insur. comp. rule the world!)Fortunately theres a scuba shop about 15 mins. from my house $5 fills 6 days a week.

You might try a couple of the online calculators for number of shots (I remember Airhog.com I think) and see how many shots you can get from 3600 psi fill and then you can judge if it is worth it or not. I you had several people you might look into a compressor but then you still need tanks. I know where I get it filled I do not get a full 4500 psi as it cools and loses some but at least they can do it. Also having looked into local fire dept who will not fill conectivity becomes an issue. My carbon graphite tank from airhog has 4500 Din connector so it can be filled at any scuba shop even if they can't fill to 4500. The types of connections becomes very confusing.

I really lucked out ,a relative who has been scuba diving for 20 years told me of a dive shop not 5 miles from my home , i called them up and he does fill to 4500,i mentioned that this was not for diving ,he said no waiver needed,as long as tank is marked with good hydro ,thats all that is needed. That is great ,and my friend sold me one of her tanks ,so now i will order 44cu.ft 4500 for my new 909S.
Thanks for all your replies,Paul :)

I am almost done writing an article on tanks, pumps and high pressure air sources. I'll post that here when it's finished. The problem with the small carbon fiber pony bottles is that their volume is deficient with a 3500psi fill. Most places on the planet are not capable of filling them to 4500psi. If that's the case in your area youmight find a smarter backup afield is a high pressure hand pump with an attached sling for carrying will work out nicely. In addition, there are some really nice lite weight backpacks designed to carry rifles and bows that would also work well with a  hand pump. I am planning on using this same configuration for some of my travel hunts so I can be completely self reliant.

Or just get a Discovery and set it up with a Crosman 2250 hammer spring . I fill to 1300 psi and shoot down to 800 psi for 30 shots . Using a 13CF aluminum pony scuba tank I calculate 51 fills from a tank that weighs about 5 lbs and will easily fit into a daypack . That's over 1500 shots , 3 tins of pellets. kirby

I don,t know why,but my AF pumps works great on my Disco and Talon, but gives me a heck of a work out on my 909s, and the 909s has a 244 c.i. tube so i would think it would be easier than the talon, maybe the foster on the 909s should be a one way foster .

I have just completed my project "Pigmee" type CF tank for taking into the field. I had to adapt a commercial tank valve, and a friend helped out with some really skillful Lathe work. I made this up under the watchfull eye of my local Scuba tank tester, and togerther we nutted it out. It can only be filled to the pressure of the local compressors available so will be no higher than 3500 psi, but all I want is to be able to get a couple of fills in the field while on a hunt. I am relatively frugal with shot count anyways, so it shouldn't be a problem, but restricyting myself to 30 shots on a whole night hunt was very hard, as we had to let a few go that we would ordinarily have pursued.

So here it is,.....custom made in a Country where you cannot get Pigmees or Warthogs. It will feed the Exanix AR6, and get topped of from my dive tank (240 Bar) double yoke set up, as the evanix operated best at 180 Bar.

Will do guys.

I have a FT comp this weekend so the hunting is on the backburner til after the weeknd, and I have recovered from the 6 hours drive each way. The Steyr is the focus this week.....each time I take it out it gets better and better, and that is only because I am learning more about how to wring it for more accuracy with every competition. Its an awesome rifle.

The CF tank will get a shakedown in the field SOONI HOPE, and I will work out how many fills from a 3000 psi top up, and a 3500 psi top up. Just so I know whether it is worth it. In my opinion, to fill the AR6 to 180 bar, mebbee two to three fills makes it worthwhile.

Fillable from the big Dive bottle also is very convenient. Am considering a part time weekend job offer at the dive shop, to get certified and fill cyliders whenowner is away on training weekends. Free air?........I reckon...lol

More later....

cheers
