Tuning my 45

I recently had Umarex put a new mainspring and seals in my rifle and there is defintely more power, recoil, and noise.  I realize that I need to put some lead through her to see where settles in at.  I'm almost at 1000 pellets through and I'm still getting a lot of smoke.  I can't get a scope dialed in yet.  It seems like every time I shoot, I have to adjust my crosshairs.  I'd really like to contribute some kill pics over in the Hunting Gate, but I can't seem to hit the broad side of a barn.  (well, no better than 1" groups at 25 yds)  

Anyway, on the subject of Tuning...I haven't found any info on tuning my old 45.  Does anyone work on this model?  I noticed that Charlie da tuna isn't tuning anymore, and the people that still are, don't list a 45 on their repertoire.  

Would it be a lot cheaper to tune my rifle, now that I have already replaced my spring and seals?

What's the accuracy like with open sights . And have you ran any dry patch's through the barrel to make sure it is dry to start with. Also you might post this in the regular GTA sight for more people to see .Marvin

The old sights were removed 20 years ago.  I have complely cleaned the barrel.  It is dry.  As far as accuracy goes, I've narrowed it down to a scope mount that keeps moving back.  The smoke just keeps coming.

Your not wiping the rifle down with a heavily oiled rag that could be letting oil seep into the loading breach are you ? And how much smoke are you getting ?  By the way what town are you near in the S J . valley ? Marvin

Hi Jonathan, that model is a pretty old model. The piston seal is probably a leather seal that slips over button that screws to the end of piston. It sounds like that the seal is hard or undersize and the new spring is slamming that piston and seal against the front of action evertime it is fired. In other words there is no resistance and lube is being carried forward in front of piston which when fired will cause enough combustion up there to make smoke.. The only way to know is for you or someone to pull it appart and check and see if the seal is still good and that it fits with moderate drag when pushed by hand up into the action. Also a visual of the inside of action can show you if there is any other problems with it being scored, pitted from rust, etc.
It would be hard to find any original parts now a days for them.

To answer your question, I'm in Bakersfield.  Also, wouldn't Umarex have done something about a bad seal when they rebuilt it?  I asked them to put in ALL NEW SEALS.  The gun was stored for about 10 years before I started shooting it again, and it got pretty rusty on the outside.  I know my dad didn't lube it regularly, and probably didn't prep it for storage, so it probably does have some rust and/or pitting inside.  It never smoked Before I had it rebuilt, even after i lubed it heavily.  So, I am confused as to why it is smoking so much now.

Just want to take a moment here. Marvin,, I have known you for some time now,, we have even spoken "coast to coast" on the phone. We are "differant" kind of airgunners. Im a "red neck" hunter,,,, you "shoot" game with your camera. Dont matter. We both love airguns & respect each other. I respect you by all means,, I love nature, & love your pictures.
