Gamo 1250 .22 duck farm outing
« on: October 22, 2006, 01:56:47 PM »
Mounted a Leapers 3x9x50 illum. reticle mildot on my .22 1250 2 days ago using one of the newly designed Accushot high profile 1 piece mounts (mount is shorter and has only 3 screws).  I let the rifle sit untouched in the gun holder for 2 days to give the loctite plenty of time to dry and cure.  This afternoon I packed up my shooting bench, all the various .22 pellets in my collection, targets and headed over to the duck farm to sight in the rig. I was especially curious to see if the new design on the accushot would hold as good as the older version.

Arrived at the duck farm, set up the shooting bench and target and proceeded to quickly get the rifle on paper.  Moved out to 30 yards and began the task of testing all my pellets for 5 shot grouping size.  Results are below....
Crosman Premier Domed:  excellent nickel sized groups.
Crosman Premier Hollow Points: excellent nickel sized groups.
Beeman Kodiaks:  excellent nickel sized  groups.
Beeman Crow Magnums: Good quarter sized groups.
Copperhead Pointed: Fair 1/2 dollar sized groups.
JSB Predators:  Fair 1/2 dollar sized groups.
RWS Super Hollow Point:  Poor results - group spread all over.
RWS Superdomes:  Poor results - group spread all over.

I shot each pellet in 5 shot groups from 30 yards and after completing firing all 8 pellet brands I repeated the sequence again in order to verify my results.  The grouping results of the second round were identical to the first round.  Clearly the gun preferred the Crosman Premiers,  Premier Hollow Points and Kodiaks.  I fine tuned the scope for the Premier Domes after which I test fired the Premier Hollow Points and kodiaks once more.  The hollow points had the exact same impact point (dead center bullseye) as the domes and the Kodiaks were exactly 1 1/2 inches lower, which worked out to be 1 mildot for aiming correction.  I put up a fresh target and proceeded to practice with the domed pellets for about 30 minutes.  On a lark I decided to try the RWS Super HP's and Superdomes one more time to see if their poor performance would repeat itself.  It did and I put those pellets away.  As for the new Accushot mount,,,, so far it was still holding rock steady and hadn't moved at all.

I put all my target gear away, grabbed the domed premiers and headed off to find a target.  Didn't have to wait long.  Large black backed seagulls were in one of the far duck pens terrorizing the ducks so I headed off . Got within 40 yards of a large gull (we have a federal nuisance permit allowing us to shoot the gulls) took aim, fired.   The domed pellet hit home, the bird fell over and that was that.  Waited another 10 minutes for the birds to settle. Finally another large gull landed on a feeder, distance was again about 40 yards.  Put the crosshairs on th middle of his wing (had a side profile), pulled the tigger and heard the thwack of the pellet striking home.  Bird fell off the feeder, twitched a couple of times and died.  Was starting to get late so walked back to the truck and headed for home.

So far the newly designed accushot mount is holding firm and the Leapers scope is working great.  I have the same scope on 2 othe rifles so I expected it would hold up to the 1250.  Now that the 1250 is dialed in I'm really excited about upcoming small game season here.  I wish the Predator pellets had performed better.  They are phenominal in my RWS 350 .22 magnum, but for some reason the 1250 doesn't give the same performance.  The groups I got with the predators in the 1250 are certainly good enough to hunt with if I fine tune the scope for them, but  I think I'll leave things just the way they are.  Good shooting all.

Very interesting Jeff, I have used the Superdomes with my 1250 .22 when I first got it and stayed with them. I did not have the selection of pellets then as I do now. I do not shoot the 1250 that much these days but I think I will check out the Premier pellets I have. Would be interesting if they worked well in the 1250. I do know they do not work with my other Gamo's. So I set them to the back of the cabinet..:) But when I got the FX Cyclone, they performed very well as you can see in a previous post.

Thanks again for you findings.
