RWS 54 recoil adjustment question
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:59:56 PM »
Anyone knows how much I need to adjust the recoil adjustment screws on the RWS 54 as described here?:

http://www.eddiecolwell.tzo.com/RWS-54.htm

What I mean, is there a way to know what's the optimal setting of the sliding action's recoil tension before/without test firing it repeatedly?

I have this RWS 54 for about 10 years now and just recently had time again to use it more often. It seems to have a lot of recoil. The action (the entire receiver/barrel) keeps sliding back and forth on the stock everytime I tilt the rifle up or down (I have a heavy scope on it). I can also move it fairly easily with my hand back and forth about 4/3 inches travel. It shoots accurate at close range so far, but I remembered the recoil being almost non-existent before.

Thanks for any comments suggestions...

I've owned one for about a year now.  It should not slide back and forth when you tilt it up and down.  It should slide forward and the ball bearing should then rest in the recessed hole with the proper spring tension until you shoot it.  It should be pretty tough to move the action by hand out of this position when adjusted correctly.  The only way I got mine right was to shoot it repeatedly until I got the action to travel its full travel and still stay locked up after cocking.  If you tension the adjusting screw too far you will lock up the action and render it useless.  Good luck.  BTW i also used a drop of hand tool breakable locktite to hold the tensioning grub screw in place after I got it adjusted.

Take a look at this site for your Model 54.  This may help a little.
