Pellet Trap Part Deux
« on: September 11, 2008, 12:26:53 AM »
The original pellet trap didn't last long at all.  Maybe if I had put 5 inches of duct seal compound in there the back wouldn't have been blown out after 10 rounds.

But I didn't and it was.

I kept wondering why I was putting holes in paper but hearing pellets hit the backstop.

I brought the wounded trap back to work asked the millwrights to go to work on it.  They returned with these today and said if I put a pellet through this they would get rid of their powder burners and swap over to air.

I'll let you know if I punch a hole through these.

That one should hold up a little longer.

With the weight of the steel plate you could of just put plumbers putty in there and not worry about punching through the back side...:)

4-5 inches of duct seal putty will stop an 810 FPS / 14.3 gr pellet at point blank range, no problem.  Haven't gone above that (yet).  I suspect it would stop a 22LR, but haven't felt the need to test the theory.  One modification I did make to the nice wooden pellet trap Timmy made for me was to face the front edges with pine quarter round trim with the curve angled toward the center of the target and the headless nails counter sunk. The softer quarter round serves two purposes.  It protects the face of the target from not only cosmetic hits, but also from potentially causing the wood to split back to where the grooves to hold the paper target are cut.  Second, if shooting wad cutters, the  curved face deflects ricochets from wayward shots inward and toward the target face instead of bouncing them straight back at the shooter.  Wear those safety glasses anyway.  When the quarter round gets too dinged up, I can simply replace it.

Great idea Tom, but we are not supposed to miss the inside of the box..:) Ya I have serveral of Tim's box's, big and small. Great design as well.  That trim is pretty cheap by the 10 foot length's..:)  And it beats tearing up a nicely made target box.

That duct seal compound is in short supply around here.  I could only locate 5 sticks and used two in the trap for a depth of 1.5 inches.

That wasn't enough so this time I'll use all 5 sticks  of the putty...and I need to modify the front as per TCups suggestion as well.  Thanks.

Kenny.that 1/4 inch plate will last forever.nice.
what about that plastic/teflon quarter round stuff??maybe that will hold up better.

I gotta put something more robust on the front, that's for certian.
