This is painful!
« on: September 14, 2008, 09:25:35 AM »
I live in an apartment in a crowded college town..there is another building directly behind this one with a slightly wooded field separating the two. At this very moment there are at least a dozen blackbirds, some dove, and a few squirrels out there. It's killin me! Right now it's both dove and squirrel season..I have my license for both, but there's nothing I can do about it. Sigh..I need to move. You guys have it made.

I sat there and watched a dove slowly but surely creep up to my patio..and when it was about 15 yards away I knew I had a shot, so I couldn't pass up the opportunity. In the previous post, I did mention there is a building behind me, but those apartments are about 100 yards away and I didn't feel as if I'd be putting anyone in danger with the shot. Turns out I was right! I made a perfect head shot on the dove and the CPHP dug itself into the ground a few feet past the bird. I'm so used to cleaning squirrels by now that I couldn't believe how easy it was to breast this thing! This marks my B30s first dove..hopefully the little nibble I have is worth it!

Good shot!  I hear they taste pretty good but 2 would be better for a snack :)  That B30 looks great btw.

Try lowering the resolution on the camera down to 640x480 (or small).  That's what I do and they come out perfect around 60-80KB Jpegs.  I can also store about 10,000 pics that way with the 1GB SD card.

If there's a will,,,there's a way. Nice shooting at the little dove's head....was it standing still or walking? Do their heads go back and forth like a pigeon's while they're walking? Nice shooting story, pics and healthy meal...lots of greens. :o)

Thanks guys! Doves do tend to have a little pep to their step and although it had started to slowly walk away from me, it was still no match for the B30. I currently have a Leapers 3-9x40 on it but I think I'm gonna swap that one with a Centerpoint 4-16x40 to see how much of a change it'll provide for long range shots. I plan to use the Leapers on my new Steroid 392 when it gets here. Anyway..back to the bird. It made out to be quite a nice dinner! I cooked the little breast in a bath of olive oil, Italian seasoning, and a dash of salt and pepper as the vegetables stir fried along side it. Gotta say, if any of you haven't tried dove yet..you're missing out on a real treat. Cleaning it only took about a minute..seriously. Pluck the breast feathers, twist the head, neck, and wings off, then pry the breast away from the body with your thumb and forefinger. Tada!

recipes?

There's no fat in those guys. Have taken so many I probably should be embarrassed. with a shotgun,I repent:)

favorite is wrapping a piece of bacon around the breast and pan frying, stick a too
thpick to hold. Just like killing them again:) Stick them as much as you like .won't do any harm.

Tinbendin'Dave
It\'s OK to explain why it won\'t work, but I like to give the guys making it work plenty of room:)
