Is it boredom? Or I just couldn't wait.
« on: September 15, 2008, 01:24:47 PM »
Well, I decided that the Centerpoint 4x32 had to go because the Quest is finally turning out to be a good shooter. I figured I would splurge and put a new 4-16x40 on my CFX and stick the 3-9x40 on my Quest. I didn't figure I would have to order a mount because the rings I have used to belong to a 3-9 Tasco. Well, the bell was too big for the rings and I don't have a source for any decent mounts unless I order one and I couldn't wait. I figured I could machine out a riser like the one on my CFX. Long story short, I spent the whole afternoon on it and I could have ordered a one piece and had it here in two days. I guess I was up for the challenge anyway.

Very nice...You'll appreciate that one more than a store bought...wish I had the tools to play with.

I've heard that more than twice (I'd never use a chuck to hold the cutter). Yeah Paul, I'm guilty of being too lazy to set up my collets now and again. As far as climb milling. I climb mill the first portion of the groove and conventional mill the finish cuts on both sides. This seems to give me a better finish and keeps the chips from galling the work. I only have HSS tooling and conventional milling seems to dull my cutters faster. I don't have a coolant setup, so that's out of the question. I use oil and slow speed/feed when I'm working with harder materials. I'm no machinist, so if you have a few pointers, let'em loose.

I'd like to have a Kurt vise too Paul. That vise is a Chinese clone of the 4 inch Kurt and I think it ran about $100. It is surprisingly square and less than .0004" runout on the stationary jaw. It has the lock down feature like the Kurt so the tighter it squeezes, the more it pulls the movable jaw down. Like I said before, I'm not a machinist, I just get lucky sometimes with what I have. I bought most of my good tooling at auctions and, like you, I'm sure, I've made a bunch of jigs, hold downs and nick nacks that were good for only one project. I'm still learning though.
