Prototype: Muzzle Extension
« on: September 20, 2008, 09:24:59 AM »
A couple of weeks ago, I asked Joe (http://muzzlemack.com/default.aspx) if he could come up with a "smoothie" style muzzle extension about 3 to 3.5 inches long that added no more than 2 inches of length to the barrel and with a restricted exit aperture.  Here is the prototype he sent me earlier this week.  Just under 3.5 inches.  15.2 mm ID.  Inside bore has been reamed smooth to a depth of about 1 inch.  A single set screw one half inch from the tapered base secures the muzzle extension to the barrel.  Joe made clear to me when we spoke that this was a prototype.  The only critique I have is that the finish is just a bit rough with some visible machining marks, and the bluing could be a bit deeper.  That said, the macro flash photography accentuates the imperfections in the finish.  With just a bit of oil and a wipe down, the muzzle extension, in hand, looks pretty good.  The rifle it is intended for is currently in NC, so I don't have photos installed.  I plan to  put it on a BAM B-26.  Hope the 15.2 mm ID is enough.  If not, I may send it back to Joe for a bit more work.  Certainly can't complain about how promptly he made up just what I had asked for, though.

Paul:  I believe that is correct, but I cannot comment on Joe's manufacturing techniques with authority.    I do know that I have exchanged emails with Joe and he is working on improving the bluing process for the finish of the steel and he has also addressed the issue of the overall finish of the steel muzzle extension.  Again, I make it known here that I requested and encouraged Joe to send a prototype of his work to me.  I do not imply that what is pictured is the typical quality of his finished products or that this specific style muzzle extension will be available for purchase.  I will say that Joe has several models available.  He seems to be a good guy with a genuine interest in the air gun community.  He is a good and reliable person with whom to do business.  I hope he will continue to be an active participant and an asset to the members of the GTA.
