What is the technique for this without tearing off the rubber heads?

Welcome aboard! Couldn't be easier, just slip a thin bladed screwdriver under the front of the pad, pry up enough to get a finger under it, and then it pops right out.

Be very careful because you can tear the rubber. CDT does allot of pad removal for tunes and I have watched him do it on my CFX's. Some are harder than others so just be careful not to tear rubber edge or leave mark on stock.
