b3 ?
« on: September 25, 2008, 06:39:11 AM »
my b3 tune is coming out not bad...i took it apart so many times, i could do it without hands, lol.

its almost as smooth as i can get it...just one more thing to fix, but, when i took it to shoot...oh man...it sucked...all of the pellets(i tried a dozen or so diff. kinds) went into a spiraling tornado pattern while flying, and when it came to where they would hit...well...you're guess was as good as mine...i couldn't get better than 4" 5 shot groups at 20 yrds...anyone know what i can do about this?(the barrel is completely cleean, using bore cleaning lightly abrasive compound, and completely cleaned out, to a bright shine)...when i [ush a pellet down the barrel, some grooves seem to be a little deeper than others, but can i fix it?...i didn't think it would effect my accuracy this much...

well, it doesn't look too too bad, but i will say that when i pushed a pellet down the barrel, there was resistance at the end of the barrel...what kind of accuracy should i get out of it?(i'm hoping better than 4" at 20 yrds...)

well, when i pushed the pellet through, i just cleaned the barrel before hand, so, no for that, and when i shot it, it detonated the first shot, but then after that, no smoke, and no detonating(i guess i used a touch too much moly...it happened both times i put it together to shoot).

any advice on what to do about a buttpad?

thanks

Dave, Did you shoot it, before taking it apart? If so how were the groups then? Did you push a pellet through, before cleaning the bore? How did it look? Take a good look at the muzzle and be sure the barrel is cut square and the crown is even. Push another pellet through and see if you have any loose, or tight spots, in the bore. Sounds like you got a bad barrel though, with uneven rifling. Also you can get a pad for a Cros Quest cheap and make that work.

no tight spots in the barrel...just a tough time pushing it through the muzzle...i didn't shoot it for groups before tearing into it...just for a before and after comparison on how it shot...i'll try to recrown, and see what happens.  thanks.

Sorry to hear you're having problems with your B-3.  I have 3 of, all home tuned and they all turned out great.  They are great little shooters with a bit of TLC.

Something I just wanted to add,,,,,, I'm not sure where you bought your B-3 but if you ordered it from Cummins (I think they have a different name now)  you could probably get a replacement rifle for free.  If you call them up and tell them that the rifle you received didn't come with a butt plate and is not working properly they will probably just sent you another rifle free.

When I ordered my second B-3 it arrived without a rear sight on it.  I called Cummins Tools and asked them if they could send me a rear sight.  They send they would just send me another rifle.  I told them I just needed the sight and they told me they don't have spare parts so if something is broken or missing or the rifle is malfunctioning then their policy is to just send you a replacement,,,, and they let you keep the "defective" rifle.   Just wanted you to be aware in case you did buy it from Cummins (or tools-now or whatever they call themselves nowadays..)

Almost sound's like a bad crown, just for kick's check the end of the barrel tube for any tiny bur's where the rifling end's and the crown starts if it has a crown to speak of. I check mine with a magnifying glass and light and does the crown look centered ?. Also keep a eye on your little rubber breach seal, if it's not creating a good seal it doesn't help accuracy and also will slam the loading breach cone into the piston chamber. I would also try not cleaning the barrel anymore and let some lead fill imperfection's which also help's the accuracy. Hope it isn't a bum bent barrel but keep us posted. Ed

Did you try different pellets?  I don't remember if you said what pellets you were using.  I have about a half dozen different brands/types of pellets and some clearly shoot better than others in my rifles.  Some will shoot 5 in groups at 20 yards while others will shoot 1/2 inch groups at the same range using the same rifle.  Also, some pellets like to be seated exactly the same each time.

I also agree the crown may need to be checked as others have stated.

hmmm...what can i do about the breech seal not sealing well enough( i have a new one in)...i know its not sealing well enough, because i put some moly on the front of the compression tube to test it, and every time i shot it, the moly splatted up to the top and sides of the tube.

thanks

Mine is a flea market Bflea3  used and needed a full rework I ended up going back to a leather seal as well as a full tune includeing the trigger and a recrown of the barrel and a barrel clean I also shortened it and made a new under lever cap the old crosman cyl. trick and a stock recarve and refinish it now shoots at 10 m stacking pellets on top of each other, what it will do at farther ranges I don't know . but this is the 3rd b3 I've had and they all were very good shooters. I would try recrowning your barrel since you have allready done most of the other stuff. if it is just shooting low you can bend the barrel to correct if the barrel is bent up down right left whatever it takes to get it to shoot on target with the scope centered. howie
