New project/tool in the works!
« on: October 03, 2008, 07:15:49 AM »
Lately I've been going through tins of pellets shipped to me from Pyramid and a few other places and have found that most of the lead in the tins have deformed skirts.  Some bad, some not so. After re-rounding a tin with my homemade Pell-Seater tool, I figured "There's GOTTA be a better way!"

Well, here's my idea... I've ordered a bunch of Drill bits and have some small aluminum blocks at work. What I plan on doing is taking the blocks and drilling a set of thruough holes in .177 - .180" and in .220 - .223. The aluminum blocks will have a bottom "Mating Plate" with Divots in it that are in the same positions as my through holes. I also have a Steel Doming Punch set.

The idea is put the block over the mating plate, drop in a pellet and follow it with a Doming punch and give it a (VERY) light tap or two to round out and expand the skirts to whatever the hole size is. Then remove the plate & push the pellet through.

I know that using the pell seat is easier with less steps, but I'm looking for a somewhat consistent approach. That, & I love to tinker...hehe

Fix, Gene, Charlie or anyone else with some input... WHatcha think???

Pretty much. Not really restamp... More like Resize.

I've been doing it for a while with Rimfire ammo using the Paco Accurizer Tool and it works REALLY well for tightening up groups, so I figure that I'd try it out with pellets.

Here's the Paco Accurizer: http://www.gunblast.com/Paco.htm

I think it would work as long as you didn't shorten the pellet when it bottoms out. Let us know how it works and I may make one for myself.

I made my own copy of the Paco Accurizer a few years ago. Mine differs in that it gives my bullets a 60 degree hollowpoint cavity. It also allows me to swage the sides of the bullet down to a wadcutter profile if I want. A wadcutter with a big hollowpoint is nasty on squirrels and rabbits.
I like your idea, as I hate having to run the pell seat through a whole tin of pellets. I've been thinking about making pellet swaging dies to allow me to make my own pellets.
