ask... What is the proper proceedure to clean scope lenses. Even though I keep my scopes sealed when not in use they seem to pick up some kind of oily film, dust and look generally smuggy.

Anyone know the answer to this? I am affraid to use Windex or any glass cleaner on them untill I find out how and what to clean them with.

I use those little wipes that they sell for cleaning eye glasses.  Each wipe is sealed in it's own little packet and there's a bunch of individual packets in the box.  They work great and I've never experienced any problems with using them.  I guess you could use the cleaning kits they sell for camera lenses also??

Below is a web link that I thought you might find interesting.  In the past I have used a soft cloth, micro fiber, t-shirt, or diaper material, and a small amount of alcohol.  Sometimes it might also be helpful to wipe the scope down with an old dryer sheet to help combat the dust attracting static electricity.

Jeff, I was concerned on what to use because of the coating. My good scopes are multi coated. Did not want to wipe off the coating if that is a possibility. I have those wipes for my glasses to..

Ya Vince, I have those little yellow wipes they send with the scopes but when I use them it just seems to smear whatever is on the lenses.  As Jeff said, it must be safe to use eyeglass wipes. And I will be making a trip somewhere to buy some more of them..

Two things I use on glasses, binocs, and scopes:  Either tissue paper (not Kleenex, but the type of stuff used as filler in gifts) with optic spray sold by eyeglass place, or my favorite: a clean, dry piece of microfiber clothe.

Good microfiber has some amazing properties and seems to lift everything off the glass without any chemicals that could possibly damage coatings.  Plus you don't have to have a bottle of stuff lying around to dry out, leak, or be forgotten.  If you're having a problem getting microfiber clothe check out your local music store.  We sell them for cleaning instruments.

Bob, thanks for you information. I would of never thought of that.. That was one of my main concerns is wiping off the lens coating. A couple of my scopes are expensive and would hate to ruine them.
