1 Shot Hunt
« on: October 12, 2008, 08:18:02 AM »
Took the .22 Talon yesterday to the duck farm to get in a short late afternoon hunt.  My main target was G-hogs, but I'd settle for anything eating the duck grain.  I slowly circled the farm twice during my hunt, doing as I usually do and staying in the shadows, but could not bag a G-hog.  I did see 3 of em, the only problem was all 3 saw me first.  One of em was a huge orange-ish colored one, probably one of the biggest ones I've seen on the farm, but he made it safely back to his burrow and went deep.  The G-hogs on the farm are starting to be less active lately,, guess they're getting ready for the long winter nap.  The nights have been getting much cooler so it makes sense.

During my hunt I did come within easy range of 2 nice rabbits and 4 good sized squirrels,, but none of em were stealing duck grain so they were permitted to go on they're way.  I'll come back on November 1st looking for them again when small game season here opens up...  :)

Oh yeah, forgot to add,,,, I wish I had brought a .177 springer with me,,,, the starlings are flocking up getting ready for their migration and the number of birds attacking the feeders was just incredible !!  Literally thousands of em in huge flocks.  Next time I go I'm gonna make sure I bring a g-hog rifle AND a bird rifle  :).

Oh yeah,,, the 1 shot that I took  ????   Killed an old soda can at 40 yards before leaving driving out of the farm    :)

jeff, why don't you use your .22's on birds?  sure they might be more than necessary, but starlings eating the grain in that high of numbers...i would've tried to take a few.

i always love reading your hunting posts(and ed's) because you make it a nice story to sit down and read.

Dave,,,,, I have used my .22's on birds in the past and I could've used the Talon on this hunt but I was really intent on nailing a g-hog.  Believe me, I was tempted to shoot some starlings, but I tried to keep on the g-hog track.

Jim,,,, I agree with you 100%,,, if every hunt was successful it would detract from the enjoyment of the hunt...  hence my "signature" at the bottom of every one of my posts   ......   :)

Ed,,,, as for the can pic,,,,, sorry buddy,,,, the damage was so severe that I was afraid to post the pic cause I thought it might be to "graphic"  :)
