Another Bushytail in the freezer
« on: November 04, 2006, 11:31:10 AM »
Spent most of the day running around from one Walmart to another trying to see if I could find any Shadows on sale.  I hit 4 Walmarts near me and while they all had Shadows for sale none of them was being "liquidated".  They were selling for their regular $99 price, but I may head back in a few days and pick one up anyway, just to have as a spare. I did buy a Daisy 1000 powerline .177 at the last Walmart though,,, I just felt that all that burned gas warranted a new gun and I've always wanted to pick one up,  but I'll post my review in the "Review Gate" later.

Anyway, got home around 2 pm and decided to get in a little late afternoon squirrel hunting at the duck farm.  Got to the farm and set up a ground blind 20 yards away from the 4 grain feeders that the squirrels raid each afternoon.  Of course as  I approached the feeders 4 squirrels came blasting out of the feeders and made a bee line for the nearest bunch of trees. I was hoping they might get hungry again and come back for seconds so  I set up and began the wait.  After about 20 minutes I heard some noises in some thick brush to my left and saw a squirrel tail snaking it's way through the underbrush.  He was heading for a small cherry tree near the feeders so, assuming he might present himself somewhere in that tree, I got ready.  Sure enough all of a sudden he stepped out on a small limb and sat there, presenting a beautiful 15 yard broadside shot.  I raised the RWS 350, put the crosshairs on his head and squeezed.  The predator flew true, heard the "thwack", followed by the sound of little skippy hitting the forest floor.  The predator hit him right in front of his ear and blasted out the other side of his head.

After that I decided to stalk along the stream hoping to spot some bushytails foraging for their last meal before dark, but there were no more squirrels to be found.  On the way back to the truck I flushed a really nice sized rabbit sitting in some brush, but I couldn't get a clean shot so I watched him disappear out of range.

When I skinned out the squirrel I bagged I found that the predator pellet had actually blasted the skull in half before it exited on the far side of the squirrels head.  The damage was awesome,,, no wonder he didn't even twitch after being hit.

I'm going to try and get in another outing tomorrow afternoon.  If I bag anything I'll post some pics.  Good hunting all.

Glad To see your loading up your frezzer with tree rats. A couple of things. 1 the powerline synthic stock sucks when compared to the gamo (I had one and I returned it) the better deal is the Winchester 1000XS Air Rifle from cabelas. it has a scope already for $139 (see below). They are the same gun just different stocks. 2 there is a good trigger tune on the internet for that gun (also see below). great story and good shooting.

Hey Bart,

Thanks for the link to the trigger tune site, I appreciate it.  I had looked at the Winchester 1000 xs (wood stock) on Cabelas and did really like it, but I was really looking to spend as little money as possible and if I ordered it online besides the $40 higher price I would've had to pay shipping as well.  Today while shopping I stopped in to a Sports Authority near me and they had the wood stock rifle for $109, rifle only - no scope, and they also had a 25% off sale  in effect.  I got all excited and told the clerk I'd take one, but of course when he went to the stockroom to get it he found out they were out of stock.  It figures.

Anyway, after shooting the synthetic stock gun I bought I'm very happy with it.  It really doesn't have any "twang" to it like my S1k does and I actually like the black look of the gun.  I find it comfortable and easy to shoot, and this gun shoots so accurately I would've think of returning it.  I may check back with that Sports Authority again before the 25% sale ends in case they get them back in stock, cause I'd buy another one in a hearbeat, especially for that price.  I wonder if they would let me buy it at the sale price even though they don't have it in stock?  I may take a ride there tomorrow and see if they'll go for that.

The most important thing is that you like it. I will be driving by a Cabelas on the 16th of this month and I plan to look at their new outfitter line.
Have you tried the Predator pellets in the Powerline.

Hey Bart

It looks like the link on the Winchester 1000XS, is not working. Did  you happen to save the document on how to mod the trigger?

And do  you think one could buy just the stock for the Winchester 1000XS and put it on the Daisy?

Thanks

Bart,

I plan on trying out the predators in the powerline either today or tomorrow and see how they fly.  Considering how hard the gun hits, if the predators are accurate I think the gun / predator combination would be an extremely effective small game setup :)

The stock from the XS will fit the Daisy and they are available. I did this with my Daisy 1000S.
