A hunting pre-cursor
« on: October 20, 2008, 02:37:54 AM »
Hopefully i'll be soon contributing to the hunting gate. I recently bought a MM tuned BAM 26, and by happy co-incidence just gained access to 65 acre ranch.
The ranch is an hour drive from my house so I hope to make a trip once a month or more on the weekends.

Also my in-laws have a 3 acre property out in the boonies and are having a crow problem, so I'll be taking on my first pest control job too!
I was there yesterday and was gifted a great target, a crow at about 30yds and 30' up in a Live Oak, but my shot was off and all i did was make him fly, as my pellet struck the branch right at his feet! I'm quite rusty it's been 20 years since I fired and airgun in anger, but it was fun to feel the adrenalin pumping as my cross hairs settled over him.

I'm off to the ranch in 3 weeks for a camping trip with 12 other guys, so hopefully I'll have a proper hunting report for you all then!

I hopefully I'll get to the in-laws before that, for another try at those Crows!
Band bang, pop pop, you\'re dead and I\'m not.

Hi John,,

Sounds like you have a couple of great places to hunt and you certainly have a nice rifle to do it with,,, those MM tuned rifles are great shooters,,, I have a couple myself..  I'll be looking forward to your future hunting reports....

Sounds great John!  Most people would give a finger to hunt on 65 private acres.  12 guys hey?  Wow, will they all have guns too? :)

Any relation to John Callanan from NY?

I shoot crows & Starlings in anger all the time but still hit them, so no excuse there, hehe.  Just kidding! :)
Make sure you practice with that B26 shooting up at a tree at an angle so you learn the POI.  It will be different than shooting a target on the ground.  You should consider practicing at 30, 40, and even 50yds, because crows do NOT let you get too close.  30yds is usually not the norm.

Looking forward to your stories after you come back!

Listen to Harry he knows his stuff. Those Crows can be sly buggers. Long range sniping is all that seems to work on them. They've got eyesight that you simply can't believe. Wish i had such regularly available shooting grounds as some of you folks.

If possible, shoot from a concealed location for the first hunt, otherwise if they see you when you are hunting, they will recognize you as a hunter whether you are armed or not.  They can recognize faces, vehicles, clothes, and have excellent memories.
Go git \'em!

All I can say John is you got yourself a fine shooter there. Those are great hunting air rifles. Plenty of power and with MM's tune you will have a great air gun for a very long time.

Thanks guys, i need to work the rust off of me, I have no doubts the rifle is up to the task!

I hear ya on those crows, I used to hunt them back in the UK, never easy to get a shot at, and always at distance. They are very clever birds for sure.

When I'm back at the ranch i will do some more practice on shooting 40yds and elevated too. There are lots of trees to set targets up in, I'm lovin getting back in to the sport. I really can't believ my luck with gaining access to the ranch, just a couple of weeks after getting my rifle.

I'm really looking forward to having some success and busting my B26's cherry!

I'll keep you posted and keep on reading here!

No relation that I know of!

I agree with ya on getting long shots at crows, i was very surprised when this one offered himself to me at such range, of course crows being crows they'll quickly learn not to do that again. Practice practice.
