Pig vs Pellet Gun......Gamo Video - Worth a peek
« on: November 05, 2006, 01:27:01 PM »
It is hard to beleive that those PBA's can hurt anything. With Gamo's latest Hunter 1250 .177, AKA HUNTER EXTREME .177 with PBA pellets at 1600 fps.

I have a hard time believing this even though I know how hard my Hunter 1250 .22 shoots.

Check this out guys..:)

I've seen this before, and I don't believe it any more this time than I did then.  I've hunted wild pigs before, and I've seen them shrug off multiple hits from a 30-30.  Granted, those were not great hits, and the pig was really *_*_*_*_*_*ed off.  Not sure how they set it up, but I think Gamo is indulging in some serious wishful thinking.  Problem is, this is the kind of thing that can get people hurt.  Maybe one of the high powered large bore PCP's, but I wouldn't try it with my RWS 350 .22, if I had any choice in the matter.  Wonder what Jeff or JP think about this, those two probably have more hunting experience than any 5 of the rest of us.  Later.

I'm with Dave on this. Hard to beleive. I watched a pig shot at a slaughter house with a .22 at less than 5 feet several times and these guys ened up killing it with a club.

I think it was stupid of them ... we'll probably end up with a few idiots running around with airguns, taking shots at anything that moves, actually believing they have achance at a humane kill. I don't wanna be the a-hole here, but if I am not sure of a kill (even on a rat), I don't take the shot.
Be prepared to see a lot of wounded animals walking around.

After all, Daisy 880's have managed to kill adults... and one well placed .22 short will be infinitely deadlier than 5 poorly placed .45 ACP's. Maybe the guy hit the animal in the eye socket - who knows? After all, it seems to be a fairly short range shot with a scope - it appears they were, uh, optimizing their conditions.

That doesn't mean such a kill is probable or even remotely prudent. Ditto the previous remark about the wounded animals.

I recently saw this video for the first time on a Sunday morning while I was sitting on the couch watching the weekend hunting shows I enjoy, and I've viewed it a couple of times since then.  Each time I watch it I am disappointed in GAMO for airing it.  Like Gene, and others, I have a 1250 and have a good grasp on what it is capable of.  Is it capable of killing a hog that size???  Yeah, if you set up a situation where the perfect set of conditions exist and you also get lucky,,, which is exactly what it appears GAMO did on this video.  But does the fact that you can orchestrate such a kill mean that you should now advertise the gun as a viable big game rifle???? Absolutely not.  What's next?? Shooting deer in the eye with a pellet gun and hoping for a kill??  Besides,, in my eyes setting up controlled shooting conditions is NOT HUNTING,,, it's AN EXECUTION,,,, and there is a big difference between the two.

In all the hunting I do, and I do alot of hunting, my quarry has all the advantages and I am the one operating with the handicap, and it doesn't matter what I'm hunting whether it's squirrels or bear,,, that fact doesn't change.  They hear better, run faster, have better eye sight, are more perceptive, and have survival skills that I can only dream of.  In order to bag my quarry I have to use every resource at my disposal, and every hunting skill I've managed to master, in order to have even a fair chance of bagging some game.  That is hunting, that is the challenge  and that's how it's supposed to be.

Videos like this one will only serve to convince some inexperienced air gun "yahoos" that it's now perfectly fine to take that  springer air gun on a big game hunt.  The result is in fact going to be either a hunter who gets hurt by the game their hunting or wounded game running off to possibly die a horrible death.  Heck, I could shoot a deer in the head with a .22 caliber rimfire rifle and probably get a kill if the conditions are just right, but does that mean I should do it? NO !!  That's why NY State, and all the other states, have game hunting laws that dictate what weapons are legal, and practical, for hunting various game animals.

I think if GAMO wanted to promote air gun hunting with a springer air gun  they should've done a video that dealt with hunting small game.  It would've been just as interesting to prospective hunting customers and I feel it would've been much more "responsible"..   Anyway,,, just my 2 cents.................

THAT'S the term I was looking for...

It was an execution! A hog hit! Comparably, a soldier would never willingly use a .22 short or a .25, but an assasin sure would...

I got's no gripes about killing animals with due respect - that is, with respect for what they are, Who made them, and what they were made for. Not all animal butchery is wrong. But this appears to be butchery simply for the sake of selling an overpriced, underperforming piece of ammo whose sole practical purpose is to let the gun manufacturers inflate their velocity ratings.

At the very least, I hope someone ate the pig...
