new hunting gun
« on: November 03, 2008, 05:15:34 AM »
well, i've been unemployed for almost 4 months, but i have a second interview with a resort as a restaurant supervisor, and they said they would really like me to join their "team", so, being optimistic, i'm gonna assume that i have the job.  by 2009, i should have all of my debt paid off, and have some cash in my pocket.  i live with my parents, and they don't let me pay for much, so i can pretty much save everything except gas, and stuff like that.  so, i think once i have a bit of money saved, i should get myself a new gun as a self congrats on the job.  here are my thoughts on which one-i want a break barrel, want it to be able to hunt, and plink, any caliber-...i'm thinking the .177 r7...its easy to plink with, and i can hunt with it, as long as i get within range...its about as powerful as a b3, which plenty of ppl hunt with.  or, either the r1 .22, or r9 .20, because they would be great all around guns.  or i could go into more powerful guns, like a super streak, or tf-89.  i have no problem plinking with my patriot, so any gun will fit the bill for what i wanna do, as long as it can eliminate pests.  i already have a g1 extrme, 350mag .22, and patriot(british).25...and a powerline, but i don't use it right now...needs some work...lol...

also, once i get a decision on which gun, which caliber?...i love larger pellets cuz of how they hit animals, but, i've been realy intrigued by timmys love of the flat trajectory of the .177, and i'm kinda interested in a unltra magnum .177...but not sure if i really want it, or not...cuz i really do love what my pat. does to stuff...hehe.

so, everyone, what do you think?

money is no object...i may even save up enough for a quigley...now thats a gun...but i really do like break barrels...course i could get a fully modded 392...been wantin that for a while...ok, well keep it to break barrels, pcp's(it would be my first...i would either get a disco, condor, or b51...i would get it from a place that tunes e, and go all out on it), or multi-pumps9i have a soft spot for em cuz my first gun was a daisy 880...) but keep it to good multi-pumps...like, no crosman 760's, lol.

thanks for readin(and wish me luck on my second interview!)

Dave,,First things first,,,GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR INTERVIEW!!!!  A second interview is usually good,,take your time with your decision on a new shooter,,,you got a few weeks to decide,,I would first be sure what you'll be using the gun for,,,then decide on the cal. You don't appear to be a .177 shooter,,,you might like the hype you hear about trajectory of a .177 magnum springers but I  would bet that it won't be enough to satisfy you,,,,when your completely ready for your new shooter,,,, I will suggest what I think would be perfect for you,,,,I know you will agree & drool over it...LOL!  Call me when your ready!!

Wow Dave, you have a lot of wishes for guns, but then again don't we all?

I wish you the best of luck on your interview!

BTW, I didn't see the Diana 34 or Panther .177 mentioned in your note.  It's 1/3d the price of a Beeman "R" and plenty powerful & shoots >900fps.  But if you have the cash for an R9 or R1 go for it.  Can't beat that Rekord trigger.

This is the airgun I want, maybe you should consider it too? hehe  It's a Steyr!  They make rifles & machine guns for many countries' military.
Oh btw, this one in the pic next to the 5-6ft dead Iguana is a .177!  :)
Springers:
Diana 36 .177

Air Force Condor .25 (Lemak)
CO2/Pump:

I am like Harry, Dave...:) Did not see any mention of a CZ-634 on your list..:) It shoots in the mid 700's and is an excellent shooter. Very accurate and does not weigh any more than the HW-30 or the R-7. Plus it has a bit more power to rid your back yard of them filthy varmints..:) And a whole lot cheaper I must say. Gene
THE ONES I SLEEP WITH: BSA Lightning XL, AA TX-200, AA ProSport, BSA Ultra, HW-97K, Crosman NPSS .177, FX Cyclone, HW-30 Nicle Plated, AA-S200, Crosman Marauder, CZ-634, R-9 DG, Webley/Scott UK Tomahawk, Benji Kantana, Benji Marauder, Benji Discovery.....

Yeah this particular Steyr is too flashy for me too.  There 's no way I 'm taking that to the woods or the range.  Too much "bling bling" :)  People will be staring, and the glare alone will alert all the critters for 1/2mi. around :)  I saw this gun a couple of days ago in the hunting section of the TAG forum and thought it looked interesting.  The guy that owns it lives in Puerto Rico.  It looks very expensive but I will look into it to see what it's all about.  It's compact like a Talon so that 's a good thing.

RE: .20 R-9

For general small game hunting use, the .20 R-9 is what I normally use.  I've taken cottontails, jackrabbits, tree squirrels, quail, chukar, and a few turkeys with it, and I definitely prefer it over the heavier, bulkier, and less dynamic-handling .20 R-1, of which I've owned three over the years.

R-9's aren't perfect, but in my view, a .20 R-9 is about as close as perfect gets in rifles availible through ordinary sources of retail trade.

The perfect rifle, to my mind, would be an older Shadow, with a more robust cocking linkage, one of Bob Werner's triggers, and a quality .20 caliber barrel.  If I could design my own rifle for the small game hunting that I do, that is what I would design.

Since I am not an airgun designer, R-9's it is.  I've got a .177, as well, but it doesn't get nearly the amount of field time that the .20 gets
