Powerline Strikes Again
« on: November 12, 2008, 02:53:34 PM »
Had to stay home all day while the landscapers worked in my yard, but right after they finished up at 3:30 I jumped in my truck and headed for the duck farm.  There's a large grassy area surrounded by thick briars and thorn bushes and in the last few minutes of daylight the cottontails sneak out of the thick briars and start feeding on the soft green grass.  I figured if I got into a good position I would wait for a bunny or 2 to emerge....

Got to the farm and parked in my usual spot.  Before heading off to the grassy area I decided to check out a small patch of woods on the way.  As soon as I entered the woods I saw a nice grey squirrel feeding on the ground.  He hadn't noticed me so I slowly worked closer for a shot.  Each time I got within range the squirrel would start moving further away as he fed.  I would stalk within range and he'd move off and I'd lose my shot.  This game went on for 20 minutes as I slowly stalked him through the woodlot.  The grey never knew I was there, he was just a very active ground feeder and always kept moving.   Finally, almost at the end of the woodlot, he left the ground and went up into the trees.  This was my chance.  I stalked to within 30 yards and waited for him to present a clean head shot.  He climbed out onto a long limb and finally gave me the shot I was waiting for.  The Powerline fired, the Tomahawk sped towards it mark and a second later the grey was falling to the ground.  He hit hard and never even twitched.  The tomahawk had hit him square in the noggin and took him out cleanly.  I picked up my kill and headed off towards the grassy field.

As I approached the field I slowed my pace and tried to pick out any bunnies that had already moved out into the grass.  All of a sudden, 10 yards in front of me, a fat cottontail darted out of the grass, raced in front of me and disappeared into a tangle of thick briars.  As I was peering into the briars where he disappeared something else caught my eye.  I could see 2 brown ears sticking up over the blades of grass 25 yards ahead of me.  I put up the scope, took a peek and sure enough there sat another cottontail with a mouthful of grass.  I put the scope on his eye and squeezed the trigger.  As soon as I fired the rabbit took off at high speed and disappeared into the thickets.  A clean miss.  I thought for sure that bunny was gonna be mine, but I think I may have jerked the trigger a bit when I fired,,,, oh well,,, I'll hunt him again another day.  :)

I stayed near the field until it was dark but never saw any other rabbits.  When I got home I took a pic of the powerline and grey for my hunting buddies.

And a fine pic it is. A pretty little meal!
Sorry to hear about the rab, but as you say, at least a clean miss. Very forthcoming of you to write up the misses as well as the successes and another reasons your stories are always interesting.
I could probably fill a daily blog with great miss stories= although there are fewer these days. Thanks for posting.

Great account of your hunt Jeff, superb pic.:) The Powerlines are proving themselves a very capable hunter , wonder if sales are going up with all these Powerline hunt's hehehe. Bunnies, they must be moving around early in your neck of the wood's, last year I could have tripped over em with so many around. I've only spotted a hand full so far and their all hanging around the mailboxes around here like their waiting for a package, hope their not ordering stuff from a airgun shop lol. I'm sure they'll be out but just a little later so when the snow hit's I'll be hot on their trail. Again great shot as always buddy and love the story and pic. Ed

Great shot on the nutter....but too bad you missed on the bunny.  Oh well....that`s hunting, if it was easy it would be called shopping!!!!   Btw, I`ve noticed the Tomahawks work well in your guns...the tin I got is not too consistent....some of the skirts are too tight, very loose and some just perfect....so I get a vertical string....and this is only at 10 meter distance!!!!

Yeah Stanley,,,, the tomahawks work well in quite a few of my guns and they've proven themselves to be quite effective on small game...... When they were dirt cheap (when they first came out) I bought a large supply of em from Midsouth  :)

Jeff,

Love the story and the pic. Question is which has better balance and vibration dampering, the synthetic or the hard wood stock?

The wooden stocked Winchester 1000 definitely handles the vibration better,,, as for balance  they both feel comfortable to me but would say the Winchester is the better "feel" of the 2.  I just recently filled the hollow synthetic stock with memory foam and that helped a great deal.

I swear,if you could do more with the trigger group...they do hit Hard!I just gave one away.A killer truck gun!I'd love to replace it with a bigger caliber HATSAN and make it one of a couple of dedicated truck guns.Great shot and harvest!!You'll never starve with a Powerline around!

I have one of the original Winchester 1000x walnut stocked guns when they first came out (My second airgun).  It is a very rough gun, the worst NON adjustable trigger of any of the budget guns I own and its harsh shooting to boot.  I purchased the gun when it first came out and it is not as powerful as the later models that followed, ie I don't get anywhere near 1000 fps, even with the lightest pellets (less power than my Crosman G1 & Sierra Pro and a lot more kick). The only nice thing is that it is accurate when I do my part and it has taken many TR.
