Had to stay home all day while the landscapers worked in my yard, but right after they finished up at 3:30 I jumped in my truck and headed for the duck farm. There's a large grassy area surrounded by thick briars and thorn bushes and in the last few minutes of daylight the cottontails sneak out of the thick briars and start feeding on the soft green grass. I figured if I got into a good position I would wait for a bunny or 2 to emerge....
Got to the farm and parked in my usual spot. Before heading off to the grassy area I decided to check out a small patch of woods on the way. As soon as I entered the woods I saw a nice grey squirrel feeding on the ground. He hadn't noticed me so I slowly worked closer for a shot. Each time I got within range the squirrel would start moving further away as he fed. I would stalk within range and he'd move off and I'd lose my shot. This game went on for 20 minutes as I slowly stalked him through the woodlot. The grey never knew I was there, he was just a very active ground feeder and always kept moving. Finally, almost at the end of the woodlot, he left the ground and went up into the trees. This was my chance. I stalked to within 30 yards and waited for him to present a clean head shot. He climbed out onto a long limb and finally gave me the shot I was waiting for. The Powerline fired, the Tomahawk sped towards it mark and a second later the grey was falling to the ground. He hit hard and never even twitched. The tomahawk had hit him square in the noggin and took him out cleanly. I picked up my kill and headed off towards the grassy field.
As I approached the field I slowed my pace and tried to pick out any bunnies that had already moved out into the grass. All of a sudden, 10 yards in front of me, a fat cottontail darted out of the grass, raced in front of me and disappeared into a tangle of thick briars. As I was peering into the briars where he disappeared something else caught my eye. I could see 2 brown ears sticking up over the blades of grass 25 yards ahead of me. I put up the scope, took a peek and sure enough there sat another cottontail with a mouthful of grass. I put the scope on his eye and squeezed the trigger. As soon as I fired the rabbit took off at high speed and disappeared into the thickets. A clean miss. I thought for sure that bunny was gonna be mine, but I think I may have jerked the trigger a bit when I fired,,,, oh well,,, I'll hunt him again another day. :)
I stayed near the field until it was dark but never saw any other rabbits. When I got home I took a pic of the powerline and grey for my hunting buddies.
