Kershaw knife deal
« on: November 16, 2008, 01:25:33 AM »
Smoky Mountain Knife Works has a pretty hot deal on the Kershaw Ken Onion design Cylcone or the Mini Cyclone (model 1630 and 1635):

http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/product.jsp?Mode=Text&SearchText=kershaw+cyclone&Search.x=0&Search.y=0&Search=1&SKU=KS1635

The link is for the mini. These are great quality for the price, and have the "assisted opening" feature. Even the mini is a pretty big knife, slightly over 3" blade length. At $25 these are a steal.
It has a Sandvik 13C26 steel blade, and the handle is 6061 aluminum.

This price ($25 and $30) is half the going rate on the net. Standard shipping is $8.74 to my location.

These would be pretty serious knives in almost a "weapon" class, might scare some squeamish types when they snap open. I have had several of the Kershaw Onion knives, and they were all great. SMKW is a reputable dealer, they typically have some nice bargains at their website, and they ship promptly.

Maybe I will order one for my brother for Christmas . . . oops.  I meant brother-in-law.  $25 bucks for a Ken Onion design does seem like a steel of a deal.  And at that, they would make pretty good Christmas gifts.  Thanks

Kershaw Onions are nice knives. The bigger 1630 is  monster. The blade steel is great, but not impervious to rust. This alloy is used for top quality razor blades.

Thanks for the hook-up Jerry...Ordered a couple Tuesday and they were in the mail box Friday night when I got home. This is my first Ken Onion blade and I found it to be worthy as an every day carry knife. It has a 3 3/16" drop point blade made of Sandvik 13C26 stainless steel. It has a very nice design and functions great. The weight is perfect at just over 5 ounces, the texture gives a good grip and the action is smooth. It even looks better than in the pictures. You can't beat the price on this American made assisted opening pocket knife. Check out this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31x7K7c0pYk&feature=related

Hey, where are mine?!  I ordered a few for Christmas gifts at that price, but they haven't arrived yet.  That video is awesome.  It gives a new "cut" on opening up a 6-pack.  Is that a safety switch I see on the back of the knife?

Maybe Jerry got you one I paid a few $ more for quicker shipping. The switch on the back is the on-off for the assist function. I'm sure you'll have your order soon. You're gonna love this knife.

Glad you like it, Dave. Nice photos.

Mine is still on the way from Tennessee.

I figured Tommy would order one.  I ordered the 1635 and am considering checking to see if any of the bigger 1630's are left. There's another goody with his name on it on the way to South Carolina. As you can imagine, it can be difficult to shop for the boy.

I had a Kershaw Ken Onion Leek (model 1660) which has become lost, and it was very useful. The Cyclone is a bit beefier, but is sure looks like a great design. I really like that blade profile. Flat ground is the way to go.

Be careful with the knife, what I read about the Sandvik alloy is favorable overall, but apparently it will rust if not cared for. I have not owned a knife with this alloy.

Here's one more tip I read long ago about knives. Lubricate with mineral oil. Plain drugstore USP, they sell it in 12 oz or pint bottles like alcohol. Works perfectly, does not smell, stain your clothes, and it is non-toxic in the event you want to use it for food. Get a little dropper bottle or a needle dispenser. Cheap but effective - for folding knives it is the thing. Works as a rust preventive, too.

Ken Onion became famous a custom knife maker, well known for his designs. When he licensed the designs to Kershaw, he has controls and he reportedly holds Kershaw to high standards for quality in fabrication and in materials. My guess is that they are discontinuing this steel, but that's only a guess. It is reportedly expensive.

Well . .

I placed my order on Nov 16th.  It shipped on the 19th.  I still don't have the knives.  Inquiry to customer service says that UPS delivered the package  . . . to the USPS, and now the order is lost to tracking.  7-10 days has turned to 16 days and counting.  So, if you order from these folks, you might pay the extra few dollars to go with something other than their standard delivery service.  As it turns out, 7-10 days was overly optimistic.

I only have one Kershaw knife (fillet) which is a great knife.  I've always been a Benchmade fan, but regardless of that, I'd reccomend Mil-tec 1 oil for all of my high carbon knives.
Go git \'em!
