Urban snow success
« on: November 20, 2008, 04:23:12 AM »
Well it took some time but I made it out for a hunt at last.:) Works picking up some and I've also been spending time down at the hospital with the wife, Mother in law is very ill so slip a prayer in if you can.:) The best way for me to clear my head is to go hunting so I loaded up the Powerline with her new camo and headed for Nut City. The weather was trying to show some sun between snow flurries when I arrived but one way or another a squirrel was coming home with me today and with that thought in mind I loaded up the Powerline with a CPH and slowly worked my way through several inches of snow towards the woodline.  With the lack of foliage on the tree's the hunt was in my favor as I entered the wood's and first scanned the ground for tracks, lot's of critter tracks but snow falling from a limb out past thirty yards in front of me got my attention. Not much of a wind  I thought so somethings got to be moving out there and that's when I spotted two squirrels chasing one another around the tree. With a clear lane with no obstructions  between myself and them I dropped to a knee next to a tree and watched them for a minute . I decided to set up for a shot from here so I got comfortable with shooter and continued to watch em through the scope waiting for that right moment and it came when one stopped on a limb while the other was around on the backside of the tree trunk somewhere. The squirrel was busy keeping a eye on his buddy and with a perfect side profile I sent the CPH away. A slight report and then the distant sound of a solid hit followed by the nutter dropping directly from the limb to the snow covered floor. I reloaded knowing that there was another out there but just then I seen him make a mad dash deeper into the forest. I stood up and brushed off the snow and began my count back to my harvest which ended up being a smidge under 37 yrds. I'm so impressed with the Powerelines accuracy and I told her so as I checked out the shot placement which found it's mark in the sweetspot. The blood was already chilling over at about 35 degrees here today so I grabbed him up and snapped a couple pic's for you all. I dressed him out and with the wind starting to kick up now I headed out, head home and warm the bones and if the wind settles down tonight I will head out for night patrol with the TAC1. Ed

Love the pictures, Ed.  Great colors for a winter hunt.  Great job on the Powerline's camo, too.  And as always with your posts, great shooting.  Glad you could get out and get away for a while.

What a great camo job on that Powerline Ed!  Looks awesome.  That 's a very orange fox squirrel and chubby too :)  I didn't know their colors get that bright in the winter.  Great shooting!

I hope your mother-in-law gets better.  Mine is not doing so good either.

Thanks fellow hunter's, Harry they got their winter coat on which is nice since they really stand out in the trees now. They don't spend to much time on the ground, the white stuff give's em away in a second hehe. Ed
