RWS 94 Show and Tell
« on: November 20, 2008, 05:58:49 AM »

This morning I got up early to go finish up the tuneing of my almost new RWS 94 before my next job arrived. Went out to the shop and started up the heater then got the dogs all situated on there trolly leases..:) Stepped inside the shop and sit down for a cup of joe and a cancer stick. I had everything ready to go back together except for the trigger assy. I had taken the trigger apart yesterday and did some polishing work. Now I was all ready to go back together with her. I had already made some dummy pins up for re-assymbly, so I slapped the piecies together into the trigger housing and she was ready to go. When I took the RWS 94 apart I made a special push tool for the spring compressor. There are many air rifles that need special tooling to get apart and back together without damaging the parts.

What I did for improving cocking and firing cycles. Since the RWS 94 was just like new condition so was the spring. No cant to it and it had been already set. I already new that she was shooting in the low 900 fps range on the pre chrony test so I knew the spring must of been in good shape and I was right. The spring is a good quality spring, but I was prepaired to use a new JM spring if need be. I layed everything out on my bench after breaking it all down and studied the parts and functions of each piece. First I measured the seal that had some gouges in it from factory assy. It was the same size as the small Apec seal that JM sells. I looked the piston over inside and out. There was a sleeve inside the piston which keeps the cocking shoe from rubbing on the spring when gun is cocked. That is a good design. But at the bottom of the piston where the sleeve was crimped to keep it from moving was about 8 tabs. Those tabs where what held it in. So right then I knew that something need to be done to correct that. That is where thetop hatwould ride in the piston and would not allow it to rotate with the spingunder cocking and shooting conditions. I simply have cut thrust washers on the lathe to be used in this case and also did some polishing on the top hat. So I had a polished stanliess steel washer ready for re-assybly and it was cut to fit the I/D of the top hand and the bore of the piston. That would sit between thetop hatan bottom of piston. Of course the spring needed to be debured and polished on each end in order to work back and forth properly and also be able to rotate as I mentioned above. On the front of trigger assy block is where the other end of sping would thrust against. This piece was cast steel and was very rough there. So I had already seen that issue and chucked her up in the lathe and did some polishing. One of the things that I noticed when test firing the RWS 94 that it would have a tendency to twish in my hands when shot. That proceedure was the cure for that problem. I also custom fit a new delrin spring guide that replaced a hollow metal guide which was pressed into the trigger block assy. There are other mods that I did that I will not disclose but I think you all get the overall picture of what a good tune consisted of on the RWS 94

Now for the re-assybly of the action and the stock. I secured the three mounting screws throught stock into the action. She was all done except the cleanup..:) Next was to take about 10 shots and then put her on the chrony.

I was very surprised at the numbers. Of course the first shot was upersonic so I eliminated that number. Fron the second shot on the numbers were very stable. I have attchec a .PDF file for your viewing. Also some pics of the tear down and final pics.

My overal personal opinion of the RWS 94 was a 9. Rating on a scale from 1 to 10. This particular model of RWS was manufactured in Spain. It was very obvious that there quality of manufacturing, tolerances and trigger was comparable to a good Euro built springer. The action was made of good quality steel as well as the internal parts. For instance this was not your tipical stamped out parts air rifle. All parts were machined. An excellent example of a good springer for sure.

When I said I was surprised I was kind of disapointed in the numbers because of the high FPS. If I have time later I will take some pics of a initial grouping of shots.

Had time late today to do some shooting with the RWS 94. Well as usual this
springer is pellet sensitive. I tried Exacts, Gamo Hunters, Gamo Pro Magnum's, Beeman FTS,
RWS Superdomes, RWS H Points and finally I tried Crosman CP's. Well the CP's were the
most consistant and kept most of my groups under 2 inches at 30 yards. As you can see there
were strays and a cople flyers. I did not pick through any of the pellets to check for defects etc.
before I would load them. One thing I noticed was most all the pellets were loose in the bore except for
the CP's and Gamo Hunters. You can see I shot three targets at 20 shots each with the CP's and as you can see
out of the three targets I managed to touch pellet holes with most of the 20 shots I took. No really impressive
but I did manage to find one pellet out of the bunch that did fly everywhere like the other's did. I still have a few
other pellets to try but it was getting dark and had to stop.

Gene,

I'm glad you got it alright!  Wow! nice tune job.. Now I'm sure I want you to tune some of the diana 18, 22,23,25, and 27s and the like,  I've been collecting.. Let me know if you want some more work like that.

I still have the slightly scratched one, folks!  But maybe I should keep it and have Gene tune it for me!!
