A woodland chorus / you only post the ones you kill
« on: November 23, 2008, 12:59:34 AM »
Yesterday, I was walking around the immediate vicinity of my place in the mountains and saw a bunch of squirrels, "locals", that seemed like likely targets.  Trouble is, they immediately heard and saw me, too.  With all the dried fallen leaves and twigs on the ground, it was impossible to move without making a bunch of racket that immediately attracts attention.  These guys are skittish, too.  They scurry away to a safe distance, run high up into a tree, hunker down and begin to screech and bark their warning signals to each other.  Before you know it, you have 3 or 4 or 5 squirrels all in a chattering chorus of alarm and nothing is moving anywhere.

So, I formulated a plan.   I found the leaf rake and a pair of pruning shears and went to work on one of my favorite trails that cuts back to the southeast behind my place.  I raked the trail clean of leaves and clipped away any branches or hanging twigs that I might snag in the dark.  About 100 yards or so, back into the woods I found a nice big tree, and raked a clean patch around the base of its trunk.  I plopped down a folding chair and was done for the day.   This morning, I got up at 6 AM and checked the local sunrise time -- 7:06 AM, and outside temp -- 26 deg.  Quick cup of coffee and some juice, then a heavy wool sweater and socks and camo, boots, and the Theoben Crusader .20 cal cocked loaded and ready, 10 extra rounds of JSB Exact in my front pocket, I'm ready.

I slipped silently up the trail just before 7 AM.  Still enough light to see pretty easily, and I very quickly found my seat and waited.  It surprised me that even before the sun came up over the crest of the ridge behind me, there was lots of movement in the trees and on the ground.  I had expected the squirrels to wait for some sun to warm up a bit, but they were definitely out and about.  A long post shortened, I waited patiently for a shot and eventually took a shot at about 30 yards, missed, reloaded and missed again.  By this time, I was standing and had moved to the side of the tree and the locals were in full retreat.  And a few minutes later, they were hunkered down and yelling to each other, over and over -- "look out look out look out be still be still be still -- its 'that guy' again with his BB gun" -- in tree rat lingo, though.

Anyway, I got to see a great sunrise through the trees and when the cold overcame my desire to be out there, I walked back to the house, un-stiffened my fingers and warmed up for a while.  Then after a cup of coffee, I grabbed my camera and headed back up the trail to pick up my seat and snap a couple of photos of the site of the failed hunt.  The photos don't do justice to the sounds and colors of a sunrise hunt in these woods.  I guess I need to make myself a better hidden blind I can get in to so I can get off more than one shot before every local squirrel is on to me though.  But there was still no other way I would have preferred to spend the morning.

Nice hunting ground there Tommy, you might want to make some natural hides with limbs and branches. Pack the dried leaves around it then plant yourself in the middle.:) Setup several of them off the trail and in key locations for clear shot's. I've done this in all my hunting grounds so if I don't want to stalk and their acting skittish I just show up before daylight with a thermos of Java and settle in, they never see it coming.;) I also wear insulated leather moccasins, makes for a silent stalk. The Native American's were masters of that. Ed

Ed:
I have absolutely no doubt I could turn you loose for a couple of hours up here and you would come back with your limit of squirrels, Ed.  I would love to be able to do that with you sometime, by the way.  If you get the itch, check the super saver air fares into Greenville/Spartanburg (GSP) airport and just let me, Bob and Gene know when.  One of us will be able to pick you up, I am sure.

That was a great story Tommy.  Too bad the squirrels all got a good look at you and spread the word..  It 's happened to all of us.
It must be really nice to walk to a beautiful place like that from your house and start hunting in a few minutes.  The nearest place for me is at least 2 miles and it's usually full of hunters.  Great idea to rake the leaves and make a path but I think you need to get out there early before they come out and setup a Blind.  I bet you 'll be posting pics of your harvest next.

I agree with Shadow, I make my own moccasins. I use old tire innertubes for soles and soft suade for the uppers, the rubber makes them water proof. I also use a piece of a camo netting from a damaged military vehical net, it is just enough of a blind to break up my outline and still allow me to see and shot through it. All it takes is a couple strategically placed branches leaning against a tree to toss it over and instant blind.

Well, I gave the nutters the afternoon off today.  I serviced two 4-wheelers, two chain saws, and a pneumatic log splitter.  I topped off all the gas tanks, checked the oil, topped off hydraulic fluid,  and aired up all the tires.  I  poured the remains of two 5-gal cans of gasoline in the Subaru.  Drove into town and refilled the two 5 gallon cans and a 2.5 gal can with fresh gas.  Mixed some fresh 2-cycle mix in the 2.5 gal can for the chain saws, and added fuel stabilizer to the fresh gas.  I smell pretty funky, but all my doctor's toys are now ready for the winter ahead.

Say, I'll bet Barack Obama has never blown the trash out of a carburetor filter, changed a spark plug, changed his own oil, or tuned up and sharpened a chain saw.  If he had, he'd be in a better position to be our next President, I think.  Anyway, it feels good to have all that stuff done.  The kind of honest work that is really a great mental break from the other kind of work I do. There is even grease under my fingernails.  I will have to take care of that too before tomorrow, I suspect. What a great day, though.  Even for the squirrels.

Really nice place to shoot.
Would love to get the chance to pop critters in a place like that.
Don't get the chance to shoot in wood lands here very often
