Filling PCP's with oxygen...WARNING!

My dad is thinking of buying a PCP...possibly a Disco, and was wondering if he could fill it with his compressed oxy tanks that he uses for breathing. I believe the pressure on his tanks is 2000 psi. I was wondering if it would be corrosive on the guns internals. What do you think? Also, what kind of performance could he expect at that pressure? Thanks

In a nut shell.......NO, NO, NO!  If I interpret your post right, I'm assuming you mean compressed oxygen tanks that people with breathing problems use to aid their breathing. The O2 in these tanks is basically pure O2. O2 is a oxidant and in pure or nearly pure form would pose a very real hazzard when used in the reservoir of a PCP rifle. The gas mix that is standard for PCP rifles is simply highly compressed natural atmosphere (regular air). Some inert gasses can be used in air rifles, nitrogen, helium, etc. DO NOT use the pure O2 in your Dad's air tanks, you will be risking an almiost certain dangerous explosion in an air rifle.

No you can not use oxygen in air guns . It is to unstable and can explode . Get him a scuba tank and fill hose to go and have a local dive shop fill it with air  .Marvin

No you can not use O2.. this is very dangerous. Pure oxygen is very combustible. Any spark from the pellet/ hammer etc.  can cause an explosion. here is a link to a blog about this from pyramydair's website http://www.pyramydair.com/blog/2007/05/please-be-safe.html

That's kinda what I figured.  Although I hadn't considered the possibility of explosion.  Thanks guys!  That's why I asked.

My buddy in high school thought O2 would boost the horse power of his car. Never did find the carbarator. We used to screw with O2 at work a shot of WD40 in a ballon fill the rest with O2 makes a nice bang when lite. Even compressed air + a combustable like oil will deonate.

Thanks Chris for the picture. For sure a picture is worth a thousand words. Pure Oxygen is dangerouse even to be around.  Like Peak sais it is a NO NO NO NO for sure to even entertain the thought of using oxygen in any type of PCP. Yikes

Marvin, where did all this come from? Please point out the post that I have ignored or did not post back a reply to. Truly I am sorry if I have been rude but believe me it is not intentional. You do make allot of great contributions here on the GTA and I am sure many of the members have gained good experience and knowledge from your posts.

Hmmm....you don't think they put those "NO SMOKING" signs arounds the vicinity of oxygen tanks for no reason do ya' ?
Yes pure o2 is very explosive.

Enough has been said already about the this subject and I'll leave it at that.

melloroadman, I am sorry.   I didn't mean to post your same info.  You may have been modifying your post while I was posting mine. I read all the posts and then started my reply and searched for that blog.  I remembered reading it a few months back.  again melloroadman no disrespect... I enjoy each and every one of your posts as much as I enjoy every members posts on the GTA.

...we had a shop aboard ship that worked with aviators breathing oxygen.  Somehow, someway, one of the guys from that shop introduced a small amount of petroleum to a pure oxygen environment, needless to say he is now dead, serious explosian.  It was a sad day to say the least.  That shipmate of mine slept in the bunk straight across from me and I can still remember how everyone left small items on his bed in respect, then one day it was all gone and someone else moved in.  Please don't EVER use oxygen for anything except for what it was intended for, and even then you need to be careful.  People see oxygen as a good thing that they need to breath, but few realize how dangerous it is to handle.  I see by previous posts that the point has been made, I just wanted to give first hand experience with the dangers of oxygen.  Be safe!
