3:30am encounter with 3 bandits!
« on: November 25, 2008, 11:01:54 AM »
I woke up this morning from a deep sleep and hear "ding dong, ding dong".  The sensor had sensed heat outside near the bait!  Clock read 3:31am.  All of a sudden I felt the adrenaline running and was almost sure what animal this was..  Don't ask me how, but I knew.  I could hear the rain outside (barely) but it wasn't raining hard plus it was a little warmer than usual, around high 30's to 40deg.

I grabbed the Condor .22 and quickly loaded a Kodiak because I had a feeling I had not put enough food out.  I slowly & quietly walked to the other room and approached the window.  I was stunned and got a huge adrenaline rush all of a sudden!

3 racoons eating out of the bowl where I had chopped up a turkey/pork/chicken (cheap) hot dog to about 20 small pieces.  I start pushing the window up and they were all done eating!  They must have finished in <15secs being there were 3 of them but 2 of them had pushed 1 away so it seemed it was only 2 that ate most of it.  Now they were just scouting the area around the bowl and were sniffing.  By the time I had the window all the way up and shouldered the rifle they were well on the move and leaving and I was left looking at their fat behind.  The good news is they did not hear me put the window up nor did they see me so I am very happy about that.  I moved the bait out to 23yds from the ~16yds a couple of days ago because 10 days ago a very large racoon heard me and looked straight at me.  I 'm hoping the extra 7yds made a difference.  Probably not, but we 'll see.   The very large racoon that visited a few nights ago was not part of this group.  These were average sized racoons, more like young adults and were all the same size.  I would guess probably brothers (and sisters) from the same litter because there was no fighting or growling at each other at the small meal site and they all walked away together next to each other like good little coons.  Probably yearlings exploring the world without mom or mom may have kicked them out of the den to be on their own.  Maybe the big one was mom..  This is going to get interesting I hope in the next few days (hopefully not weeks).  I 'm going to purchase a large bag of dry cat food so I don't run out and can put out enough of the stuff which will take them a while to consume.

I 'm thinking of letting them eat a couple of more times before I attempt to take one of them (if they return).  I kind of want them to get used to coming back, and make this a regular stop on their patrol, so if I bag one, the rest won't be able to resist coming back again.  I wonder what my chances are shooting one "early on" and the rest coming back a few days later?  I don't want to scare them all off and never see them again..

The only bad part about this early morning encounter was that I could not fall asleep until 4:45am because I kept thinking about them and what other food to get the next day for them :-)  I lost more than 1hr sleep and had nothing to show for it.  Oh well, it will eventually pay off I hope.

They'll be back even if you take one buddy, on my night patrol hunt's I took one at the garbage can while his buddy ran a few yards then stopped and waited for the other to stop moving. He then went back up sniffed at the dead one and proceeded to work his way onto the Garbage can. I scared him off when I cocked the shooter to load another round hehehe. Good luck Harry. Ed

I know I have some bigger prey around here besides the nutters. There is a stream about 300 yards away that has several beaver in it. I saw the game warden parked near there the other day. I have spotted what looked like a rolly polly possum but could not see clear enough to identify it. With Harry getting all these cridders come up close makes me want to feed the critters also..:) Out my back door is my deck and I have a spotlight that comes on when there is any movement back there. Only problem is that if I do see something worth while to shoot , Ed lives to far away for me to ship the carcase off to him for dinner..:)

I think Ed spot on. If they know there's food there they will come,   sooner or later. Just be careful you don't attract too many, You could become a nocturnal creature too.

Nothing to report from last night.  I bought a large gavlanized steel pan about 13" in diameter and 1.5" deep from WMart and a 16lb bag of seafood dry cat food.  This way multiple racoons can easily feed together.  Also put some corn out in the old 8" bowl.  The cat food has a strong smell but did not attract anything and I 'm thanful no cats woke me up in the middle of the night either.  However at 6-6:30am every morning the neighbors let their cat out, and she comes straight to the bait.  I chased off the big male cat and brought the everything inside the garage.  Left the corn out to see if it attracts any crows but they 've been keeping their distance lately or flying overhead and have not landed on my trees for about a month now.

The .22 Condor is ready with fresh 2500psi shooting Kodiaks at 1,000fps at the lowest PW setting, and Eun Jin 28.4gr at 925-930fps or 54fpe.  I shot 1 of each through the chrony just to make sure and took 1 shot with each at my 25yd target outside to make sure the gun is still zeroed well.  The EunJins are pretty large .22 pellets and rip through a 2x4' with authority so I think they 'll work well on large small-game.

That Condor is more than up for the task.  You'll have no prob when the opportunity presents itself.

Oh I know the Condor is more than up to it.
I took a lot of adult (10-15lb) groundhogs this summer that were almost the same size as these 3 bandits, with a 14fpe .177 Springer (inside 25yds w/head shots).

The reason I got the Condor was for the groundhogs that hung out 50yds out and the possibility of a visiting Coyote in my backyard, or running into one when hunting in the woods this winter because they 're all over the place here.  I spot them crossing the road not far from my house all the time.
