Question about Cabelas "Outfitter" series air rifles
« on: November 21, 2006, 11:20:50 AM »
Does anyone have any information about these air rifles?  I know what the web site and catalogs state, but I mean real information regarding build quality, accuracy, etc, etc.  I can't find anything in the way of real world reviews on these and have been seriously considering purchasing the thumbhole stock version.  Since I live in the (not so) great state of NJ I have to make nearly a 3 hour one way trip to the nearest Cabelas store to see one up close (assuming they're in stock).  Just curious if anybody has seen one first hand, or knows anyone who owns one and what their thoughts are with regard to these airguns.  Thanks.

Same here for the 3 hour one way trip, but I am curious as to who makes them.
I  just might have to call the Michigan store and see if they do have them in stock, and take a road trip some week end.

I haven't had one in yet but I did have a guy e-mail me asking if I would tune one if he ordered it a week or so ago. I told him I would but I haven't heard back from him yet. I do think that all three are Chinese and based on the Gamo Hunter series although the one thumbhole stock looks an awful lot like a B-26-2 stock with that high comb. Hopefully it will be in within a week or so. I've had an awful lot of guns coming in lately and going to have either hire the grandson to do some of the clean-up or hire Gene. If I hire Gene I'd get more done and cheaper too...lol...

Hey Mark I was at that Cabelas (Hamburg) on Monday and I went to look at the Cabela series. They only have one on the shelf the only thumbhole is in the bargain cave the stock was damaged (selling it for $131 I think) It is a Chinese gun it said so right on the barrel. The wood is what you would expect from China. The Pic on their web site looks alot better than it did in person. All that being said I was fully intent on buying one when I went there, but after looking at them and playing with it for a few minutes I believe that there are many more better deals out there. The scope (no name) was clear and bright but who knows how it will hold up? just my take on it.

If so, it's only the metal work. The wood work that I saw would need to be re-finished. It was a little bit of a let down after seeing the pics on the web and in the catalog, oh well.

Thanks Bart, I think you were the poster on the other website that I replied to.  Funny,  the Hamburg Pa. store is the one that I would have to drive to (I live in NJ).  I wasn't too worried about the stock finish, if need be, I would re-do it myself.  It was the quality of it's action, barrel lockup, etc that I was curious about.  My "motivation to purchase factor" has dropped dramatically with your post.  I had been wanting a full sized thumbhole style air rifle ever since I shot my son's Recon (a little too small) and was contemplating a Crosman/Remington Genesis.  When I saw the Outfitter series  with a wooden thumbhole style stock, I thought, "thats going to be my next purchase".  I guess I'll wait until more people have a chance to give them the once over.  For now, it looks like you saved me some money  :D

Hey Mark

Food for thought...:)  I have a B26-2 which I love dearly. it has a beautiful thumbhole stock. If you were interested in a buying a B26 standard stock rifle, I would gladly trade stocks. :)

Mark
Like I said the thumbhole version had a damaged stock which was a nick 1 inch long 1/4 inch wide and about 1/8 deep, about 3 inches below the cheek piece and 1 1/2 inches back from the thumbhole. At a price of $131(I think) it might be worth it. call them and have them put it on hold for you. the barrel lock up seemed ok and the scope was nice, but remember I only held the gun for about 2-3 mins.

Hopefully "Charlie" will have one sent to him for a tune and then we can get the real scoop once he see's the internals and give us his expert opinion on it from inside out. :)

Thanks Gene, I really appreciate that.  I was reading Bob's post again and he mentioned the B-26-2 so I did some internet surfing.  After reading several reviews and posts on that rifle, I'm going to add it to my list as well!  So now there's three...this is getting more and more difficult HE HE HE!  My choices now are:  Remington Genesis, Cabelas Outfitter, Xisico B26-2.......I'm soooooo confused :D  :D

on edit:  I don't know, for some reason I'm leaning a little more toward the B26-2     http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/bestairgun_1917_466064   :D  :D  :D
