My First Chronograph Findings
« on: December 06, 2008, 06:24:06 PM »
Well, This is my first feeble attempt using my new chronograph. The Talon SS is new and unmodified with less than 100 rounds through it. I'm filling from a 80 Cu ft. Scuba tank with a Leichester regulator and a pig tail quick disconnect fitting. I mounted my Chrony on a camera stand and all rounds were fired at 10 meters from a bench. My largest group of the afternoon was approx. 3/8" with many 5 shot groups hole on hole. I figured a closer range was easier so I did not accidentally shot my chrony. This rifle just absolutely amazes me with the accuracy generated from a 12" barrel. My back yard range is set up so I can shoot 5 meters for the Grand Son's BB guns, 10 meters, 25 yards and 35 yards. I am shooting off a bench and of course using the AF bipod (Which will be replaced ASAP with a Harris the moment my bipod adapters arrive)

Up until the recent purchase of the Talon SS and the Condor I have been mainly shooting springers. It's nice to realize the PCP rifles are a lot more forgiving as far as technique and hold but still I find a loose gentel hold still produces the tightest groups. Other than the three strings listed below I did shoot one long string of 62 rounds with the PW @ 6 and a prefill of 2850. It was Hi-810 Lo-753.3 and
Av-781.3. POI started to drop off at shot #50.

I plan on shooting a few different  pellets and topping off with my hand pump to 3000 tomarrow. I find shooting with the chrony and playing with different combinations very interesting and surprisingly relaxing. I hand loaded for many years and hunted, I find this all very similar.

Well, obviously this is just a beginning, So....I'd sure welcome any and all advice. I do have one question: Whats the main cause of an "error"  finding on the chrony? It seems like I hit an error about every 10-20 rounds. Are the chrony findings below about average for what you have found with similar rifles?

Thanks,

Pete

Pete thanks for the info . As far as the error readings go I have hardly had any but as I mentioned I use the lights on my sun screens . The only time I used my chrony outside this summer it was a sunny day and I had the  chrony under a awning and again I had really no errors . So may be some one else can help you . I do try and keep the pellet about 4 inches above the sensors when I shoot if that helps . Have you tried any lower fill rates yet . I was surprised at what I could get out of my Condor at 2000 PSI .Marvin

Marvin,

Thanks allot for passing the photo's along. I think my problem with the "errors" was as the result of being to far away from the electric eyes. This being my first time using the chronograph I was a little paranoid of  shooting the up rights. I sure enjoy using it and have started to set up a number of different test strings I would like to run. Filling to a lower reading is one of them. I think I'll spend the majority of my time testing the Talon SS and I have not even gotten around to taking the Condor out of the box. One thing is for sure, Man do these things really shoot. I can't remember the last time I was shooting small tight groups like I have been getting out of the Talon SS.

Well, No shooting today, a little nippy here as the temp has dropped down in to the mid 50's. Have a great day and again thanks for all the tips.

Pete
