I was invited out to a friend's cabin in mid wisconsin this weekend to assist in ridding his cabin of pests in preparation for the ski season. Summer and winter are the 2 seasons that he uses it primarily and it hasn't been used since early Sept. It has been unseasonably cold in these parts and when you get an early cold snap like this the critters use desperate measures to get comfortable. He's made it to the cabin multiple times to find squirrels squatting in his cabin, having found multiple ways in this 60 year old structure. This is the 2nd time I've been here to help him, and the last time we used .22 LRs to do the job. That was before I got the AG bug. I told him that I was bringing some new AG's that I just got and wanted to try out, and he was bit apprehensive, ribbing me a bit by saying, "you know these country squirrels aren't as easy to hit as your city squirrels, you sure they're enough gun?", "We'll see, I have a feeling you'll be singing a different tune when we're done" I replied.
Well the weekend was lots of fun, though, we didn't harvest nearly as many tree rats as anticipated. Driving in, we saw plenty of em', but once we got to the cabin it's like they remembered us from the year before and made themselves scarce. I brought a TF79T HPA expertly modded by our own DanoinTX, and a Bruce Cox made 2250 that is earmarked as a Xmas present for my nephew, although I will most definitely be getting one for myself, as Bruce does an excellent job and I love his stock. Both of these new shooters were wearing out my basement range, and exceeded my expectations in terms of accuracy. I had to limit the 2250 to shooting from the cabin, as it was too cold (20 degs) to take out, unless i wanted to make co2 snow. I hit a tree rat at 30 yards out and about 20 feet up the first day with the 2250. Perfect head shot with a pred, dropped from the tree and quickly expired. Shortly thereafter we decided to take a hike along a ravine, I brought the 79 and took a squirrel at 40 yds, again with a perfectly placed fuse box shot. The second day I tallied 1 more with the 2250 and 2 more with the 79, though my cam died, and I forgot to bring the charger, so no pics on the second day.
I had tallied 5, and my buddy with his terrific Savage .22 rimfire got the same for the weekend. He was very impressed with the power and accuracy of my "little bb guns", and I think we may have a new member to our AG family. BTW there was a local outfit that we took our squirrel tails to in return for some great fishing lures made with squirrel tails.
