12 flb enough?
« on: December 12, 2008, 03:05:43 PM »
I recently tested my Gamo 440 over the work Chrony ( I think i might be getting one for Christmas but could not wait) I an average of about 820FPS with JSB exact .177 which works out to be pretty much 12fls at the muzzle. I think I went a bit heavy with the spring tar but it is very consistant and accurate.  I was wondering with well placeed shot what distance would it be realistic to drop a rabbit? and also is this enough power to tackle feral cats??

Go on my trip in a few days,
Thanks,
Rob

My 1.77 Geox's pop bunnys out to 50m with head shots
And I would not think it is putting out anymore than 12ftlbs.

Ps..cats die if shot at point blank range

I took all my bunnies at 25-30 heart/lung pass-throughs with my Quest .177 pre-tune

With shot placement and the right pellet for the job 40+ yards. I've dropped "P-dog" (Prairie Dog) and rabbit at that range . I'm a fusebox target guy and the P-dogs have a tougher hide then bunnies. Ed

I got an Evolution 12ft lb gas-ram,,,this is not my typical airgun,, 20ft lbs or better is more my taste,,,,,,,,untill I started to shoot my Evolution,,,,I was amaze what can be done with 12 ft lbs....

BTW,,Ed Shadow talks about shot placement but he don't tell ya,blindfolded, two broken arms & a sling-shot he takes down bunnies at 92 yards with head-shots,,,,,LOL!!!!!!   Some people like Big Ed Shadow were born for this,,,,other city slickers like myself were born to..........well 'm not going there..LOL!!!!!!!

Welcome to the limits imposed on us UK airgunners!
Anything more than 12 fpe & we need a class 1 firearms cert' , the land has to be passed by the police as suitable & you need to show purpose & need & in all respects it's treated as a firearm.
For 12 fpe in .177 up to 50 yds max for headshot on bunnies & nearer to 35-40 yds in .22 would probably accepted by the majority as reasonable limits for humane kills.
Time to sharpen your accuracy & fieldskills to "put a little English on it" LOL.

Cottontail rabbits up to 40yds with head shots (or heart shot) should not be a problem but as you know it's all about shot placement.  Squirrels have a tougher hide believe it or not and more muscle mass so don't underestimate them.

I would not shoot a feral cat unless it was inside 20yds with a 12fpe gun.  Their skull is tougher than a bunny's and lets not forget their "9 lives" :-)

I've got this Hunter Elite that initially(post tune) was doing 920-930fps.  It has since dropped significantly but I have to respect its integrity.  It's doing about 12 foot pounds now but is fabulously accurate with minimal recoil!  The local squirrel populus have sounded an APB on this gun!  It wouldn't be the first time I've shot this gun to have the pellet enter one eye and exit the other(depending on angle) at 25 yards.

Then again...  within 30 yards those tree squirrels don't have a chance.  If more power is needed there's always the .22 350 Mag!

Looking forward to the pics Rob.
1.25" groups is a bit too much and risky with a 12fpe gun so I would not recommend 50yds (unless it's a bird) because with a lower powered gun like that you need to be as accurate as you can with fur.  Pick your targets carefuly and move in close to where you feel you can place that pellet within 0.5".

Ok guys, I am also a bowhunter with most my pigs being shot between 10 - 25 yrds so stalking it is.  When I did the Chrony test i was 5 yrds back from the Chrony and got 820fps so it probably is going a bit better than 820 at the muzzle.  I am not sure how much MV would drop in only 5 yrds though.  I will stalk in close to be sure though -you cant beat a clean one shot kill.
