Window Sniping - almost too easy.
« on: December 14, 2008, 02:33:50 AM »
Well, another new day, another cup of coffee, and another backyard visitor spied from the upstairs spare bedroom window at about 25 yards.  "Smile, your on candid rifle scope!"  Looks like I pulled the shot about 1 inch to the right, but that only translated to a distance of about 4 or 5 feet traveled before keeling over, once this one fell from the tree.  R9 Goldfinger .20 cal with Beeman FTS pellet, one shot through the pump house region.

A beautiful morning light for that shot. Nice work! Not going far with a 5mm through the boiler works.

Yes, the R9 in .20 cal is a true "Classic" air rifle, and the beech wood stock is also a very comfortable ambidextrous style, making this one a pleasure to shoot.  This was one of the first two air rifles I bought (the other the Crosman 2250XT).  The R9GF now has a Maccari spring and seal, plus a little tweaking of the Rekord trigger, making it a very light, crisp pull (probably not much more than 1 lb or so).  It shoots Beeman FTS around 730 FPS very, very accurately.  I have several other fine springers, but none that I can truly say that I like more than the venerable Beeman R9GF in .20.  I think it is one of the best all-around shooters available in the world of air gunning.  The only major drawback to the Mike Melick tuned B-26's (ChiClones of the R9) is that they cannot be had in .20 cal, which I believe to be the perfect caliber for the R9.

Tommy, installation of choked .20 Lothar Walther barrel on B-26 will cost $75 - $100 and it still will cost less than R9GF. The only thing that is keeping me away from doing it is because I’m not sure if the bluing on gun and barrel will match. I remember Gene has installed one of those barrels on one of his guns.

P.S I like clarity and quality of your pictures. Nice camera.

Olympus E-500 w/14-45 mm lens.  Available light.  Imported to iPhoto, optimized, straightened, cropped, and then exported as jpeg, lowest quality, maximum dimension 1000 pixels. File sizes seldom exceed 100K and the quality looks good on the 'net.  Thanks.

nice shootin tommy, nice lookin gun also. I have a question for you and everybody else that shoots squirrels what do you guys do with the tails. Here in Wisconsin we have a fishing lure company named Mepps, they make alot of spinner type lures and they are always looking to buy tails or trade them for fishing baits. Just thought I would let you and anyone know who reads this.
Just imagine you woke up one morning and every animal you\'ve ever killed was in your yard. I think I might need a bigger yard........

I harvested a couple of tails to use for fly tying, but for the most part, I don't save them.

Great shot with the R9 Goldfinger....from the looks at those pics...the pellet gave him a bad case of heartburn....the permanent kind.

Beav,I save them and I trade them for fishing lures from Mepps. You can get the information on the Mepps web site. I have a couple dozen black and grey tails in the freezer right now. I also would  like to add , that I don't just hunt squirrels for their tails. They are good to eat.

Fast acting, highly aggressive, acute case of lead poisoning. Those Beeman R series rifles are some great shooters.
