Tuners - kinda long
« on: November 27, 2006, 07:06:59 AM »
First of all, this is in reference to the folks who tune springers like Weihrauch, Air Arms, Feinwerkbau, etc. So it doesn't apply to Bob (CDT) and those other folks that are tuning Gamo, Xisico, Industry brand etc. apparently some of these people also do some stock work but I'm not sure about that.
In wandering around the various forums it has come to my attention that there are 'tuners' out there who, often by their own admission, keep guns for an extended period of time. This time period sometimes runs into years. I have been solicited by one of these people & it was only dumb luck that kept me from sending them a very expensive (for me) airgun that I didn't want gone that long. It's only my opinion but that just don't seem right. Now, on the other hand there are responsible, knowledgeable business people like Mr. Watts.
Paul Watts: I cannot say enough good things about Mr. Watts. I sent him a 1982  H.W. 50S that was not working, an outstanding air rifle but I liked it a lot better when it worked :). He determined the extent of the problem(s), repaired them, fabricated (among other things) a new seal and did an advanced tune. This was done in less than a month including shipping both ways, & I live a long way from Tn.
Thanks,
Mike
P.S. Hey Bob, had ya' goin' there for a minute, didn't I? :D  Thanks for the referral.

on a lot of the other guns like the RWS's, Fwb's , Beemans, some Weihrauch's and others but in some cases I shy away from them simply because parts are often hard to get and like you said, they set around forever in "labor"  waiting to be "born again".....lol.  I would  rather not take them in than have an upset customer. And I don't like the pressure that it puts me under.

I didn't word that original post very well. I should have made it clear that after we discussed the particular problem that I was having with that HW50s you pointed me in the right direction and saved me from the possibility of a multi-year wait. I guess I should have said "dumb luck & good advice". 8)
Thanks again, Mike

Hey Mike...no problem. I didn't mis-interpret it. It's just that some of the guys in the past were a bit upset when I declined to work on their older guns that would have to have parts made for them or because they were no longer available. I understood their dilemma but I didn't want to have their gun laying here forever while I tried to find parts.

Charlie, you have got to be the fastest on turn around time there ever was. Your new name is Speedy Gonzalez :)

I don't know about the fastest but I do try to keep the turn around time down to about three or four days and can usually keep that. There are exceptions though, especially if I need to order parts. The secret is that I have done so many in the past that I have developed a routine and a sequence that I follow and I have all of the tools needed  both hand and machining in place and at my finger tips. If I start to get behind, I just call Gene and get him over here to help me out...lol...
