What is the advantage of the Maccari GRT kit?

I keep reading about replacing the mainspring in air rifles to increase performance and lessen the felt recoil.  Makes sense.  What is the advantage of installing the grt kit as opposed to just the spring?  How difficult is it to install?

The Maccari springs and seals are very good quality.  Those who go to the trouble of disassembling, de-burring the sharp edges, on the compression tube, cleaning, and relubricating -- in short, all the labor involved in a lube tune feel that for the cost of the spring and seal, it makes sense to go ahead and replace these while the air rifle is being worked on.

If the OEM spring isn't canted (bent) it is probably fine to just use the original spring in re-assembly.  But the new seals aren't particularly expensive and many of the factory stock seals tend to be scored, especially if the were put in without great care and without de-burring the sharp edges on the compression tube first.  So, it may make sense to replace the seal even if you don't replace the spring.

Finally, those who do more serious tuning than just the lube tune (as above) will actually custom fit a spring guide, add a "top hat", kind of like a very short guide at the top of the spring, and thrust washers (to eliminate the transfer of rotary torque and reduce spring twang.  If you intend go to that much trouble, then it probably makes sense to use a Maccari replacement spring.  They are made of very high grade spring steel and are machined and turned to more exact tolerances than the OEM springs in most cases.  If you are going for the best possible tune, then you want to replace the spring, too.  The Maccari springs generally have a longer life expectancy than the OEM springs.

I might add that one of the most important aspects of a new seal is proper installation. Yes I spend allot of time making sure that there are no burs in the action from front to back. Believe it or not there is a proper procedure from start to finish on the installation of the piston with new seal on it into the action. I find that 99% of all the brand new air rifles that are sent to me have 1/4 to 1/2 of the stock seal radiusthat has been damaged through factory installation. A machined stamps out the action and the next process is stuffing the piston with seal into the action along with spring, etc. There is not a little man there carefully putting the air rifles together...:)

So bottom line is that chance's are that when you buy a new air rifle from Crosman, Beeman, Gamo, etc. you will have one with a damaged seal. The new seals that JM sells are far superior in quality than the factory seals. They conform much better to the action cylinder trueness than the hard nylon seals from the factory.

You just cannot beat a hand tuned air rifle with new seal and spring. Word!

Gene, I don't want to derail this thread but can you post photos of a 'tophat' and go into a bit more detail on them?
