Cold Hunt with Joe Cuz
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:37:17 AM »
Well, me and Joe hit the woods again this afternoon and man was it cold !!  Besides the 15 degree temps the wind was whipping up pretty good which made it feel even colder,,, but we stayed out there till the end of the day and gave it the old college try.

We hunted my favorite squirrel woods again and we wound up alternating between still hunting the trails and taking up sniping positions in areas that had good numbers of squirrel nests in the trees.  We,, actually I should say Joe, spotted 2 squirrels during our hunt but they lived to see another day.  Didn't matter though,,, I was very proud of Joe,,,,, both squirrels were feeding on the ground and Joe spotted them like a pro.  I never saw them until Joe pointed them out to me.  I did take a shot at one of em and promptly missed,,,  I tried to snake the pellet through a small opening in the bushes but the pellet clipped a branch during it's flight.  After I missed we both saw the grey scamper up a tree but as hard as we tried we couldn't spot him.  I think maybe he found a hole in that tree that we couldn't see.  It was exciting though as we both thought we had him isolated in that tree.

We finished out the day trying to locate some rabbits in some really thick briar patches, but the bunnies just didn't want to come out and play.  Before leaving for the day we took a couple of pics to document the hunt and also to show everyone that Joe finally lost that trademark orange flame knit hat and replaced it with a hat that is closer to camo.   Little by little he's gettin there   :emoticon:

It was another great day in the woods with a great friend and I can't even convey how much I enjoyed the day.   Joe and I are gonna hook up again after Christmas and have at it again   :D

Another fine day on a hunt with my buddy Jeff,,, :)  Yes I'm still thawing out from the arctic weather :0  I don't think the six scoop ice-cream sundae I just pigged out on is helping the thaw process :p  We did see some activity today, two tree-rats scampering about the cold,I am feeling something good coming soon,,I sense it(grizzly addams-esque).... :)  My I LOVE NEW YORK HAT is gonna be the difference :o

It was cold today,I had on four t-shirts,four thermal shirts, thermal under wear, sweat pants, sweat shirt & my blue jeans & it was still cold :0  :0    For you SOUTHERN DUDES,I got one thing to say ,,,,,FUGHEDDABOUDIT!!!!!!!

Another fine report of your hunting safari with joe  and it sounds and look's like joe is transforming into a top hunter, he's aleady a crack shot with the shooter's. 8) Fantastic pic's of Ma Nature in her white gown and the two hunter elite's and your getting the same system that we got here buddy. I have made it out for several quick hunt's but mainly to check the game activity , very little track's. The snow fall's heavy which is no problem but it's going sideway's :0 due to the upto 40 mile an hour wind. :0 No rabbit tracks for the last two day's and the squirrel tracks are slim, they get out grab a bite and head back to the nest. I will head back out tomorrow and see what's moving if nothing else get some pic's of the white wonderland in my neck of the wood's. Thanks for sharing your great outdoor expedition with us Jeff. Ed

Hint for cold weather,...keep your feet warm!!!! Wool socks are standard issue!!! LOL's Glad you two had a blast freezing your butts off in the woods. Neat looking weapons too!! Sorry to hear it was windy. Keeps them little critters closer to their nests. I've found in my exp on days like that, just to scan the limbs and main crouches of the tree trunks and look for  little 'bushy' bumps. Especially on the sunny side where they can sun themselves for warmth. Wind makes it so hard to hear movement in the wood, and having to rely on sight only just makes the hunt more challenging!!!!! Hope you fellas have better luck on the next "walk in the woods"!!!! tjk

Wow, I give you guys a lot of credit!   It was VERY cold yesterday and windy!!  Well ~80mi. northwest of you guys anyway.  It was in the teens here with the windchill.  It seems you guys got hardly any snow compared to what I got.  We got a total of 16-17" of snow between Friday and Sunday.  I was looking forward to getting out there too this past wknd or this week, but the snow is almost up to my knee so there 's no way I 'm hitting the woods in those conditions.  If I can't walk more than 100yds in 1/2hr, then I stay home  :o

Well you guys are having better luck every time and the excitement and anticipation of the hunt and comeradery makes it worth it.  I would not have expected to spot much game yesterday being so windy and the temps so low but you guys managed to spot some nutters.  I have better luck when it 's calm out even if there are 8" of snow on the ground and below freezing.  They seem to be more active when it's less windy.

Good luck next time, can't wait till you guy go out there again.

I liked your red flaming hat!!  but I guess your new one is a little more suitable for hunting.

The weather definitely had a hand in the lack of targets our last 2 hunts, but after the holidays Joe and I are gonna sneak back in those woods and show them critters what an air gun can really do  :emoticon:   !!

The really funny thing is that after Joe left my house I walked to my backyard to throw out some garbage and there were critters everywhere     ,,,,, of course the huge pile of bird seed I had put out might've helped  :D

now that joe has changed his "fashion" statement with the flaming beanie, you finally saw some prey.  i knew that flaming hat was scaring them off..ha!!....looks like you're training joe well.....in a selfish way i'm glad you guys are having some cold weather because it is pushing all the migratory water fowl south....its duck season down here and my a-5 is ready!!!

Ah yes,,, duck season,,,, nothing like sitting in your blind watching the sun peek up over the horizon as your decoys float calmly on the water, you see a flock of black shapes in the distance winging your way,,, you grab your decoy and start blowing  that mallard high ball call the gets their attention,, they bank left and start heading your way..........................................

OK,,,, I'm up for some ducks   :D

We're right in the middle of duck season here and it's been a pretty good year so far.  I haven't really gone after the ducks,,, been to busy with the BB guns :)   but I may start going after them soon.  The duck farm I hunt on has several large fresh water ponds and a large free flowing stream that runs through a swampy wooded area,,,, to say it's loaded with wild ducks is an understatement.  The other day I sat and watched one of the ponds as the ducks landed for the night just before dark.   I counted over 500 of em, it was awesome.

Anyway,,, glad to see the ducks are winging your way,,,,, nothing better than marinated duck breast......  Good hunting....

15F....brrr that`s cold....and with a wind....a least you guys were in the woods...so the trees would`ve blocked some of that wind.  Better luck next time out....  I think the cold is keeping the critters in their roost.
