My new Patriot stock project....
« on: December 22, 2008, 07:47:49 PM »
...went kind of slow but I am soon gonna be done with the stock. It still has alot of sanding and then finishing to do and I hope it will turn out well. It is my first stock ever and I had very limited tools to work with. Inletting came out not so smooth but that because I didn't have the router, I just did it by using drill press that I borrowed from my friend. The rest is done by dremel tool. Anyway it is still more tools than my dad uses when he makes stocks. He mostly used cheasels. When I was kid I just used to watch him working on stocks.
The whole action fits pretty well and I decided to fire 100 shots or so to see whether stock will hold up and it did pretty good. One of the pictures that's me shooting it-my friend took it. I was kind of worring about cracking it and I decided to reinforce the stock with couple of cross bolts near the postol grip. Don't know what I really did this for... but what a heck- just experimenting with suff.
Then today I got fired up about making the pellet trap. Went to Home Depot and asked manager if he can give me some of the wood scrap on the back of their store. They cut stuff for people and throw the left overs way so I thought why not ask. He said that he couldn't  give it to me for free but he can sale it for $1( one). I thought that is good deal and I picked out some of the nice plywood they had in big container for scrap. Took me about three hours but I could finish this pellet trap. I shot it with my Condor it held OK
Anyway non of this thing look professional but I thought I would share about my progress.

Looking good. What material did you use for the stock?

Anatoliy, it certainly looks like you have picked up some of your father's skills. The stock looks beautiful and a very nice job done on the pellet trap. Please keep us updated on your stock and for sure give us some more pictures.

I used hardwood plywood and I glued three pieces together to acheive necessary thickness. It feels strong to me.

I did a plywwod stock for a Baikal MP512-M earlier this year as an experiment to see if plywood would hold up to a springer.
It ought to last a lifetime on my Baikal if it holds up to your Patriot! :)

Awesome looking stock you have there. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

I don't see anything amateur looking about your stock. All it appears to need is some sanding/smoothing and finishing. Considering you're not finished with it yet, I'd say you did quite well. I like your pellet stop. What thickness steel sheet/plate did you use? 10 ga? 1/8"? Could you give us the dimensions of the individual pieces of the trap? I'd like to build one like that.
Tung oil is the most acid/water/fungus/rot/instect resistant of the commonly available wood oil finishes and would be a good choice for a trap to be used outdoors. Or, if you want to vacuum-bag it, you can impregnate it with polyester resin for the ultimate in protection.

This looks nice. You've got a good eye and a good hand.

I also like the trap. I'm going to build one of these myself. I was thinking of using .125" steel plate for the backstop. Is that overkill for .22's?

Thank you guys for your kind words! I always amaized when I see some of your creations and what you can do with wood and metal. You guys inspired me to try it out. I have been here for a while and kept on reading some of your projects and learning about a lot of stuff. Still I have hard time with measurements in America:) -Inches and feet, sometimes confusing. But I am learning.
Jeremy, I made the pellet trap without any measurements but I just came home and I took the size down and it is: 25" wide, 12" tall and 14" deep. I have made the back wall under 45 degree angle- the reasons are obvious. I went to hardware store and I was really debating what thickness of steel to use and I went with 1/8 of an inch. And since it is under 45 degree angle it took my Condor with 32gr EunJins pretty well. I shot from 18 yards away and it made some dents as you can see but I made the trap for longer range, so it will hold up for a while. One more thing I did was to double the thickness of back wall with some extra piece of plywood in case of penetration. I also put steel plate on the bottom- I figured pellets will go down with force after hitting the back.
Kev, I do not know so much about the metals but if you talking about airgun in .22 cal then I think .125 steel thickness will work just fine especially if the back wall is under angle. IMO every back stop will eventually fail but .125 is enough, I do not know about firearm though.
Thank you guys
