Hunting Regulations
« on: December 28, 2008, 10:18:18 AM »
With all of us airgun hunting addict's out there I just wanted to remind varmint stalker's to make sure that your small game license is up to date, please check (your local) hunting regulations in your area, some states and or cities and towns have law's against small game hunting. :0 We want all our GTA hunting family to be safe and legal out there, cause you never know who's watching here even the Game department and we want to remain on their good side and would hate to hear of any of our family getting busted for illegal game hunting. :0 Also please read all the info in the Hunting Gate concerning rules and regulations, now get out there and enjoy Ma Nature. This is a very nice post if I do say so myself.  Texas is weird in that certain animals have no closed season.  In this case, squirrels are fair game for me year round'.  It is always a good idea to read your local rules a regs regarding airguns and hunting any species regardless of catagory.  I've also noticed that the wording in Hunting and Fishing manuals can be deceiving and that's why there are 800 numbers in the event you or someone you know may have questions.

Be safe, be sane and mind your local regulations!

You're lucky to live in a county that has no closed season on squirrels.  Where I live, there's an open season, but most of the year is closed.  Of course, it doesn't matter for air guns, anyway -- you can't take a squirrel with an air gun regardless of season, since Texas categorizes it as a game animal.

I have been looking in to regs here in FL.  Not so hard to figure the seasons on things.  My problem is finding specific regs on air rifles, where I can and can't shoot.  I have the Sherriff's dept. blessing for the yard as I am out in the country, but would like to find other areas and opportunities.

Texas is funny because you can take a rabbit with a airgun but not a squirrel we can take ground squirrels and flying squirrels both of which I have never seen in my parts of North Texas.I have never got a answer back from the parks and wildlife for the reason, but here is what we can hunt http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/annual/hunt/nongame

What's *really* odd about the TX laws regarding squirrels is that I can use an air rifle to kill a nuisance fur-bearer (e.g. a raccoon) on my property (without a hunting license at all), but the only mention I can find of nuisance squirrels is a reference to trapping and moving them.

In NC, Wildlife Enforcement considers an airgun as a rimfire/centerfire rifle and is subject to the same rules and seasons. I was unable to find it anything about them in the hunting regs so I contacted Wildlife and got it in writing from them in case I ever got stopped. Florida might treat them the same as NC. If you can't get a response out of fish and game then go to the elected official that fish and game falls under. Get it in writing and carry it with you.
