Can You Identify This Chinese AirGun for Me?
« on: December 28, 2008, 10:42:35 AM »
Just bought a new Whisper, but then was thinking, I've got an old pellet gun somewhere!  Looked around, knocked a bunch of dust off it and took some pictures.  I remember buying it, shooting it a few times, and writing it off as a cheap gun that would never hold a group.

Here's what I know about it:

Its Chinese.  It says Made in Shanghai, China, on the action.  There are also some Chinese characters above this (see pictures).
Its .177.
I bought it about 15 years ago at a gun show.  I didn't pay much, I think under $25.
It weighs about 6 pounds.

See pictures below and thanks in advance for any help.

Couldn't post pictures, too big.  I'll retake the pictures with less resolution and post soon.

Is it and underlever or a break barrel. If it's an underlever it's probably a B3-1.

Jason and Ed,

Thanks for the replies.  I have the pictures up now.

It's an underlever.  B3-1?

Henry

Been doing some homework on this site on this airgun.  Looks like this would make a great first tune attempt gun for this rookie.  I found two online guides to tuning these airguns, but if anyone has any "tricks of the trade", I'm all ears!

I plan to take some "before" benchmarks with this gun today.

Also, tjk mentioned "Mike in Iowa", any more details?  And what does "AG" stand for?

I saw some pictures of b3-1s with monte carlo style stocks.  Mine has a pathetic piece of wood attached to it (I hesitate to call it a stock).  Is there a source for replacement stocks for these?

Thanks again, guys.

AG = Air Gun

Mike in Iowa: http://airgunartisans.com/flyingdragon/

Look in the Library link at top of the GTA page. The tune up guide for the KL-3B Fast Deer is basically the same gun turned sideways.

Stock work is up to you, the beauty of a $25 rifle. You can hack, sand, paint, whatever, without worrying about ruining anything of value. Search up some of Shadow's camo jobs, or Howie's stock mods, for stellar examples. Black bedliner can make them look very stealthy.

The B3's are made by at least two companies in China, and each is different. Yes, yours has the more simplistic stock, but those seemed to have tuned better for me than those South Summit b3's with the monty carlo stock which seems to have slightly lower abilities, at least with what I do with them.

Can that South Summit stock fit? Yes, but it will need a light reworking, and that is where you're going to have to get it from. They sell their B3 for about $25. It uses a pin to keep the cocking lever in check; the one you have uses the stock itself to rub against. Thus you will need to build up that area of the South Summit stock to keep the cocking lever in check. I used some Teflon furniture slides, cut down and epoxyied in place.

Also don't let those pictures fool you. It is a crap game as to the quality of ANY of those cheap Chinese springers stocks. That is a translucent paint, not a true stain, and can and does hide tons of putty. I found that my Industry brand B3 (the one you have) had nice wood. I ground off the checkering at the base of the stock and added a spare Gamo rubber butt pad. Fits fair enough, and with the walnut stain, I like it. The other one needed a Dupli-Color Truck bed liner paint job to look acceptable after I took off the factory stain (makes it look like a synthetic plastic stock).

Don't let any of this intimidate you. They are pretty darn nice when done. I get low 700fps out of them and can hit within a 2inch circle at 60 yards with a cheap Daisy 3-9+32 Powerline scope.
I came into this world with nothing, and I still have most of it left!

I think that Fast Deer isn't just sideways turned B3, for exampe trigger mechanism and piston are different. Tuning principles are anyway quite same for all springers. By the way, Bam xs-b3-1 and Fast Deer internals are pretty similar.

Hey Everyone,

Thanks a bunch for all the info.  I'm gonna tackle this thing head on soon.

I took some references shots yesterday and have decided to post them in a different post to try to chronicle my tune on this thing.  Just thought it might be helpful to others, as well as give all you experts a chance to critique my work along the way.

I like the truck bed liner paint for the stock.  Has anyone ever tried it on the action and barrel.  My barrel is pretty scratched up.

Thanks again for all the help guys!
