Need Help - Stuck Barrel Screw
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:03:33 PM »
I just installed my new GRT III trigger and moving forward with the home tune on my Gamo 440 Hunter (a refurb bought from Cabelas).  However, the barrel screw seems to have been put on with red loctite.  I have tried everything to get it out (heat, force, etc.) without luck.  The screw head is pretty mangled but not stripped out.  Any ideas as to how I can get it out and when I do, where I can get a replacement barrel screw?  Thanks in advance for any assistance/guidance.

I don't know about getting it out, seems to me the heat thing should work.  The screws in my Gamo have some type of plastic on them that keeps them from vibrating out but it isn't lock tite.  There are stuck removal tools available at Sears, but they can be messy to use.  It is probably a metric screw and you can find a workable replacement at your local screw & nut store - getting a replacement will be the easy part.

GAMO might sell you the screw, they sold me one a while back.

Some use manual impact srewdrivers to loosen these. You can buy them at good tool stores or Sears for $20.

I found that an oversized screwdriver (REALLY BIG ONE) works better and it doesn't strip the slot. I used vise grips to clamp to the flat of screwdriver blade and used it as a turn handle. This method works especially well for tightening the replacement screw. By the way, I did it on the carpeted floor and held the rifle with my knees to prevent it from spinning.

Good luck!

Per Gene's advise I used an impact screwdriver with success.  Of extreme importance is to use a blade that fits the screw.  After the initial removal, a large screwdriver and a wrench to turn the blade has been the method.

Thanks for the suggestions guys,  I need to head to the hardware store to see if I can find a screw driver or bit that will fit the slot on the screw head.  Now that I have buggered that up pretty well, it will be even more of a challenge.
