Cyclone Expectations....
« on: January 03, 2009, 11:14:50 AM »

For Dave Dunn (and other Cyclone and/or PCP owners):

After a week of some real exciting experiences w/ UPS Overnight Air which took a week (and a first wrong-caliber rifle arriving in a right-caliber labeled box), I got the FX Cyclone/Synthetic I finally settled on a week ago.

I spent this afternoon at the range braving the (initially) scornful looks of the "real" rifle shooters getting a quick feel for performance--and figuring out the ins&outs of anything really new, from magazine to pump seals.

But before I spend more time/chronying it tomorrow, I'd appreciate a critical eval from others owners as to expected/acceptable accuracy from this level of rifle.

This was today:

I gotta tell ya, Mike, looks pretty damn good to me!  You're basically MOA there, and that was on medium power, I'll bet it does better on high.  You might need to do some experimenting with pellets, I've had good luck with Kodiaks in the higher powered PCP's.  For some reason, heavy pellets have worked better for me than the light or mediums, regardless of rifle or caliber.  Any idea of your velocity, yet?  Gotta run, keep us posted, I'm looking forward to more info.

Dave

That looks pretty danged good.  DaveD is probably right though, some pellet selecting may get it a little tighter, and it may tighten up over time as the barrel gets seasoned up.  Also agree about the Kodiaks, I have owned 8+/- PCP's now and can't think of one that didn't like Kodiaks, but I've had a few that didn't care much for JSB's.  Regardless those groups are groups to be proud of, I'd be pretty happy with those myself:)

Took it out w/ th Chrony and a coupla tins of different pellets for a few hours this afternoon. All shooting at 50 yards since that's where `ya separate pellet flight charcteristics.  All were strings of 8 shots with the gun pumped/starting at 195 Bar.  The rifle was *very* consistant shot-to-shot for velocity: +/-  one-two fps max

Kodiak Dbl Gold (Nothing to write home about -- Doesn't particularly respond to this pellet)
21.14 ..... Vel .... FPE
HiPwr ..... 787 .. 29.04
MedPwr .. 664 .. 20.68
LoPwr .... 539 .. 13.62

JSB Exact
14.30 ..... Vel .... FPE
HiPwr ..... 935 .. 27.73
MedPwr .. 790 .. 19.80 (Very Accurate  < moa)
LoPwr .... 655 .. 13.61

Crosman Ptd
14.36 ..... Vel .... FPE
HiPwr ..... 924 .. 27.20
MedPwr .. 770 .. 18.89 (Good Accuracy ~moa)
LoPwr ... .633 .. 12.76 (Very Accurate < moa)

Polymag (16.0gr --  Loaded singly as they are too long for magazine)
Generally all over  :-(

RWS Superdome (14.5gr)
Hi Pwr -- All over
MedPwr -- Stable group, but unimpressive
LoPwr -- Has potential... go back and retry

So I haven't found anything (yet) this thing likes at high power/27+ FPE.  However I continue to be impressed with those El Cheapo Crosman Pointeds.  They've shot *very* well in both the RWS 460 & this Cyclone at speeds below 22 FPE.

I don't have any CrosPremiers (yet).  Do I understand correctly that they are (merely) a more QC'd pellet of the Crosman "Pointed" family -- with the thinner/shallow skirt design?

And.... is the "regular" Kodiak really any different from the "Dbl Gold" variety.  If so, I'll try those next.

Mike how much POI drop did you notice at 50 yards between the low and medium settings . And how much did the groups open up on high .Marvin

FOR GENE: Actual Cyclone velocities you might have on record....
« Reply #6 on: January 04, 2009, 02:39:47 PM »
Gene,

By way of direct comparison (so I can calibrate my head on what I've got here), what actual velocities have you got on record for your .22 Cyclone with any specific weight pellets.    Any classic/weights in the RWS/Superdome, JSB/Exact, CP's, Kodiak line ?

I'm trying get "real" data of others rather than the advertised 14 - 23 - 32 FPE the official manual touts....

Many thanks,
Mike
post: (I'd ask Dave, but I understand he has the .177) (?)

Great shooting Mike. It has been almost 2 years since I did any pellet chrony testing with it. Basically after finding the pellet that worked best for me on medium power I stopped looking and stuck with them. Crosman Premier Heavy's shoot great at the distance that I shoot at. 40 to 50 yards..:) I can only say this Mike, that you can not say enough good about the FX Cyclone. They are just great accurate PCP's that would put a smile on any avid hunter's face...:)
