Spring Compressor Kit.
« on: December 03, 2006, 12:15:14 PM »
I have been working on a Spring compressor to sell and this is what it looks like so far.

It's .045 wall Aluminum tubing with 1 1/2 square red maple ends, the screw end is pinned on with 5/16 brass pins and the bottom fixture is also supported with 5/16 in brass pins. The tubes on this one are 24 inches long but I am going to make them a little longer to fit more rifles.
The screw is 7/16 in threaded rod that is tapped into the wood end.

And  it's plenty strong to do a 1250, I have a hydralic pressure gauge I use to test springs and I put over 250 lbs on it and it didn't break or strip out the threads in the wood.

In the other picture it has a beeman R-7 going back together, and was no problem, with the Nylaron bushing on the end of the screw the spring did not even want to spin as it does with a compressor made with a cut off "C" clamp.

I am still working on the center support for the rifle breach but I need to go to the lumber yard Monday and get a wider chunk of maple. It will have a plastic coated U clamp to hold the reciver from moving around.

I haven't figured out what it will sell for yet till I get costs for the material and machining time, it also will be a kit that you will have to assemble so to keep the cost down.

Just kidding, that's a nice simple design.  I think when I built mine I used enough lumber to build a house.  I've ended up making different attachments for different rifles, added movable supports, designed it so I can support the barrel end, or from the breach area where the barrel goes in.....I think I may have gotten a little carried away.....hehe, where were you when I needed you?  I really did need someone there to tell me,"Dan, put down the tools, you're going a li tt le overboard here".

I've only taken two rifles apart on mine, it works pretty good, but probably wasn't worth the energy I put into making it.  The biggest problem I had, specifically when I supported the breach area was my base (3/4" plywood with lengthwise 2x4's) actually flexing if the end cap didn't line up right...well, ok, the 2x4's didn't actually bend, but the plywood did flex at the middle.  Anyways, long story short I added 2 more lengthwise 2x4's and all is well now:)  I think the actual problem is that I made the thing so stiff there wasn't any room for the gun to float if everything wasn't "perfect".  Mine is so stout now I could probably break a B30 in half if I keep tightening the clamp.

Think we need people like you to save us from ourselves:)

If I got a decent spring compressor, I wouldn't have an excuse for not losing weight! Seriously - when installing a spring by holding the rifle vertically and pushing down on it, every ounce helps!

Especially new, unset springs....

I take them apart with out a compressor but I do assemble them with the compressor.

Just a good pair of leather gloves and they pop right apart.

I have 5 spring compressors almost done and will be listing them soon.
Price will be right on them also.

I have five of them finished right now, the price I am still debating on it.

If I keep them reasonable they will have to be assembled by the buyer and there is no finish on the wood, they only require two pin holes to be drilled and stove bolts installed other than that you just push the slides on the tubes.

here's a finished and assembled compressor.
