CFX Muzzle velocity
« on: December 04, 2006, 04:42:58 AM »
Got my new CFX .177 today. Because we're limited to 12fpe in the UK, the gun has 16 joules stamped on the box.
16J is 11.8 fpe and with 7gr RWS Hobby this should equate to 871 ft /sec.

Cleaned the barrel, then first shot dieseled with a crack like a 22LR; 5 or 6 more ran quiet. Then I put the chrono on and 10 shots gave:- 844, 824, 840, 823, 821, 833, 813, 826, 824, 817. Average is 826.5 ft/sec or 10.62 fpe.

Apart from a Baikal pistol, I'm new to springers. I assume the dropping off of velocity is due to eliminating oil in the gun, but is 826 a reasonable figure for a gun rated at 870? As it beds in, is it likely to increase, decrease or stay the same? On the face of it, 10.6 fpe is quite a drop from 11.8 .

Any comments/suggestions/ideas please guys?

PS. Rich from Mich; I'll be ordering a guide set and trigger mod in the next few days.

Give it some time to break in the seal and all the moving parts, it will get better the more you shoot it.
It takes a thousand pellets before you really know what it will really do.
I notice that the shot to shot varies a bunch, this will also get much better the more you shoot the rifle.

Ya I agree with Rich on that. Most all the Gamo's I own finally tightened up on the groups after a thousand or so pellets. Your velociity will improve some also. I did on my three CFX's. They are deadly accurate when after you tune them and put a GRT-Trigger in them. Your feel for the trigger is about the same as a good match springer after the trigger replacement.

Best of luck and keep us informed.

Thanks Rich & Gene; I gues that's what I wanted to hear! The groups seem fine even now (if they improve, it will be icing on the cake) I was just curious about the velocity, as a warranty claim, if needed,  is always easier immediately after purchase, than after 3 or 4 months.

Derekm

The velocity that the manufacturer quotes are usually 10 to 20 percent higher than reality. They use very light pellets to get those numers. But you have made a good choice. That CFX will give  you many hours of pleasure and will keep getting better..:)

Got a couple of hundred or so shots through the gun now and it chrono'd today  at 860 average, 876 hi and 850  lo on ten shots. 876 is just a fraction below our legal limit, so all is well. Rich's trigger mod is fitted now and it feels like a different gun!

Those are great numbers. My earlier post I forgot to put percent after the numbers..:) They say 1000 fps but as you see it is not close. But those numbers are very respectable. Keep shootin and trying different pellets. You will find the right one and will be surprised at the accuracy you get..:)

Hi Gene
Accuracy no problem, it's on the mark already. As for 1000fps, I hope to Christ it doesn't get that far because it could be 5 years inside for me! (In UK over 12fpe = firearm. No FA certificate can mean lots of jail in our "free" country!). They sell these guns as 1000fps in the US, but here in the UK they are built for 16 joules which equates to approx. 12 fpe.
In my first post I was concerned that I was 50 fps under our spec. and did not know if the gun should settle in and come up in output or not. Happily all is well. No doubt it will get more consistent with time (about 25fps variation hi/lo at present). I've got Rich's guide, tophat and thrust bearing to fit when I get round to it, so that should do the trick, along with a good de-burr and polish. The trigger is already almost match grade with the insert. Excellent gun at our price; bloody incredible gun at your price!!
