For all you guy's that do home tune's
« on: January 08, 2009, 05:13:03 PM »
I have noticed that there are a lot of shooter's that like
to do there own tunes for one reason or another.
Here's a trick to tighten up the guide to spring clearance
if you don't have the gear "lathe" to spin up new tighter guides.

I have used  electrical heat shrink on a few of my guns.
It comes in diffrent dia and thicknesses and as it shrinks it
incresses in thickness so by useing diffrent dia's you can control
the thickness it aso comes with a glued inside surface that cures as
as it heats up while shrinking.
for steel guides I just put in in the oven for a few mins till is  tight
make it longer than you require as it also shrinks length wise &
trim it when cooled.

I have never had any come off or wear though "fingers crossed"
it's pretty tough stuff.

How many shots do you have on the gun after this "modification"?

Lathe in a bag. I like your idea. If you don't mind I think I will steal it to try to quite down my QB97 I got for Christmas. Question though, what do you do for a lube between the shrink wrap and the spring?

Walt..I would just use grease or what ever you would normaly use.
I use a stuff called Lanocote that I cover the spring with ONLY because
living in NZ its a drama to get spring tar.
LANOCOTE is a anti seize compond very thick &  also lubes the spring.

If I had to come up with a number of shots though the gun
with the shrink wraped guides maybe  3000 shots?

Kiwi's idea has been around a long time. It works ok for some home tunes. Years ago it was introduced to use on spring guides but most people found that over time the shrink wrap would disintegrate and break up in pieces causing mechanical failure. Tuners call this method a bandage.

Yup the ol heat shrink treatment. Many of us used it on the B3 plastic spring guides. it closed up the free play between spring and guide and helped dampened vibration. It's a fast cure but as Gene mentioned they can break down after wear and disperse inside the shooter:(. Regular inspection's should be performed if one decides to go with this and if it's within your means budget or mechanical skill level nothing replaces a well fitted guide. Ed
