Machinist Gate?
« on: December 05, 2006, 04:17:13 AM »
Is there a certain gate that those of us who are into machining can swap knowledge and techniques? Just wondering... :)

Thanks

Sorry but no we don't...but...Now there is an idea and something to weigh and something that would be of interest to many of the guys.. Good suggestion. How about it guys????  your thoughts???? We just need to be sure that we don't run out of gate room. Depending on the response, Gene and I will get together soon about it and determine the feasibility of it.

Hey KIXX, I think it is a great idea. All the new incentives and ideas can be discussed and  shared and worked out there. Sound good to me and as Bob said, we will discuss this. Ok Guys lets see some more peeps that want this Gate.

Oh by the way, any ideas who would want to monitor this new Gate? :)  hehe...

Will only take a hour or so to set it up when ya all decide on the content details..

Sounds good to me, I nominate Rich as the obvious choice for moderator :-)!  The Crosman Forum has a similar idea, and I see Kixx and Joben there all the time.  Good idea, guys.

I think it would be a good idea any way you look at it only because there is so much information out there that needs to get to people who could benefit from it in so many ways. I am not a journeyman machinist myself. I have 5 years in a tool and die shop and some classes in CNC programming the rest of what I do is from the old school. I know this...who ever is in charge of this new Machinist Gate needs to be fair and open minded...hehe there are alot of ways of doing things and not everyone is going to take the same road...lol. Maybe we could share some tricks on these mini milling and lathe machines as well...:D

I think it would work...especially here on GTA.

Sounds good to me.  I'm not a machinist at all, but I am a sheet metalsmith.  I know a bit about the processes, but it would be great to hear more about it from the pros:)

I am all for it.......I have a mini lathe and mill  and know little about their uses.  almost every thing I have made, I have had to make twice....but I am learning. I am going to make a new co2 gun and will possibly be using a muzzle loader barrel.  right now my big project is to design and manufacture a valve that will support a big pellet or slug.  I may go for a .32 or .40 cal that is at least 36" long.  I would  go pcp except the dive shops around in my area will not fill tanks unless you are a diver.   I have  redesigned a valve I have posted elsewhere to be a coaxial that will require little efort to open it, but am not sure what it will take to close it after the pellet is sent on its way.  will just have to make a trial valve and see.  john

I'm having a good time with my lathe and mill. They are pretty cool once you get them set up and tuned in a little. I got the cummins lathe and the central machine mill / drill.  I have a couple of projects I'm working on now. The 22 cal extended probe bolt for my 1322 and later I want to make a brass brake for the 1322.

think it is a good idea however, it is something that will need to be weighed and if it does come to pass it will be at least a couple of weeks before we would/could initiate it.

One consideration that some may object to is that it might require that any intended post be submitted and evaluated (to protect the interest of others) by the moderator, Gene and myself prior to being published to the forum. Post replies of course should be no problem. Again, just a thought.

Also, regarding the considering the selection of the moderator. That person is someone that would need to be carefully evaluated by both Gene and I (and perhaps another person) as it would carry some additional responsibility over and above a general forum moderator from a technical point of view. At this point we are at the membership discussion stage which is good and any and all input by you as the membership is appreciated and valued so let’s hear it.

Sounds like a good idea to me; I've been wondering about a mini lathe for some time now.
