Preforming Pellet Skirts
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:16:04 AM »
can anyone give some info, and picture detail, of how to and what preforming pellet skirts is all about.  i'm kind of clueless on this.  a lot of people are talking about it these days.  i shoot only CPHP'S and Predator Polymags.  i'v only ever had a very few with deformed pellets, and thats mainly in the cphp's, i'v yet to experience a deformed predator. (that i didn't cause by trying to reload to fast)

Thanks

I thought it was a piece of metal you'd use to push the skirt of the pellet out so that it fits exact in your barrel.

I have a Beeman pellet seating tool.  $20 bucks or so from Pyramid.  But you can order plastic swizzle sticks with a ball-end for about $3.95 for a package of 10.  They work great.  Quickest way to check pellet skirts?  Lay the pellet sideways on a flat, hard smooth surface (a small picture frame with glass works great) and roll the pellet.  Blowing gently is usually all it takes to roll the pellet.  Any wobble and the pellet is out of round.  Also, it it rolls straight, the skirt is too narrow, if it rolls in an arc, the skirt is wider than the head of the pellet.  The most accurate pellets are usually those with a skirt somewhat larger than the head of the pellet that roll with no perceptible wobble.  If you really want to get "jiggy" with your pellet selection, then you can weigh individual pellets and shoot your groups only with pellets of exactly the same weight within 0.05 grains, and seat the pellets to exactly the same position in the breech with your pellet seat tool.

I had a problem with some .25 pellets that I bought, Milbro Rhinos, that were just a little too small for the breech of my WFH. I took a 1/4" ball bearing, and put it inside of a rubber grommet that I found laying around. Placed the grommet flat on the table with the ball inside of it. Placed a pellet so that its skirt covered the top of the ball bearing, and the grommet held the pellet up straight. A light rap with a plastic hammer...and presto, I had a cheap way to make the skirts fit better. I have to do that with every pellet, but they fit really well in my WFH.
